How to watch the Euro 2024 group stages live

It’s been three years since the last Euro tournament, which was postponed due to the pandemic. This time the action takes place in different stadiums across Germany.

Last time out, England narrowly missed out on victory against Italy, after being beaten on penalties. Three Lions fans will be delighted to know that their team is one of their favorites this year. This is not surprising, considering second place in 2021 and sixth place in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Southgate’s side are believed to face stiff competition for the trophy from France, as well as Germany, who are of course playing at home. But before facing these rivals, the team will have to go through the group stages.

Here’s everything you need to know, including how to watch from where you’re based.

What is Euro 2024?

Euro 2024, also known as the UEFA European Football Championship, is the 17th edition of the men’s football tournament which takes place every four years (except for the 2020 competition).

All UEFA member states have a chance to qualify for this event, but only 24 teams managed to qualify for the final tournament.

Italy are the reigning Euro 2020 champions, but neither they nor any of the countries in which the matches are taking place have been granted automatic entry into the tournament.

Previous winners include Europe (1964, 2008, 2012), Greece (2004), France (1984, 2000), Denmark (1992), Netherlands (1988), Germany (1972, 1980, 1996), then Czechoslovakia (1976), Italy (1968, 2020) and the Soviet Union (1960), but never England. We came third in 1968, ex-third in 1996 and second in 2020/2021, so it’s time for England to bring the score home.

When does Euro 2024 take place?

There’s not long left to wait before the tournament begins. Euro 2024 begins Friday June 14, 2024with 51 matches played between this date and the final Sunday July 14, 2024.

How to watch UEFA Euro 2024 in the UK

The BBC and ITV share the broadcast rights to Euro 2024. They have taken turns to nominate the best choices for each round, although both channels will broadcast the final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

The BBC is available on your TV, online via the BBC iPlayer website and via the iPlayer mobile apps on iOS and Android. The final will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC One HD. Some matches may also be available on the BBC Sport website.

ITV is available on your TV, online on the ITVX website or via the ITV Hub mobile apps for iOS and Android. You’ll also be able to watch ITV live using any Freeview app. The final will take place on main channel ITV and ITV HD.

To watch either channel live, you will need a TV license. This applies even if you use BBC iPlayer to catch up, but you can still watch past shows on ITV Hub.

How to watch UEFA Euro 2024 from the United States and abroad

For US-based readers, you have several options for watching Euro 2024. You can watch the matches directly through Fox Sports on channels 1 and 2 if that’s part of your cable package. Alternatively, you can sign up for Sling, fuboTV, and ViX.

If you want to watch both BBC and ITV from outside the UK, using a VPN is probably your best bet.

A VPN (or Virtual Private Network) is software that allows you to hide your IP address to make it appear like you are somewhere you are not. So you can be in Europe and pretend to be browsing from the UK, then access BBC or ITV services as usual.

We’ve reviewed many VPNs, but our current top pick is NordVPN. Since streaming services are judicious about using VPNs, you may need to try several different servers before finding one that works.

If you’d like to learn more about the sign-up process, check out our guides on how to watch iPlayer abroad and how to watch ITVX abroad.
