I was running out of space on Steam Cloud to save games: here's how I freed up space

Cloud, freed, Games, here39s, running, Save, Space, Steam

When the PC starts to give us operating and/or performance problems, and after trying a thousand and one solutions, none of them work, the quickest way to enjoy our equipment again is to start from scratch, that is to say format hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

If we are playing a game that we have not completed, we have different options to avoid losing progress: make a manual save or trust the platform on which we purchased them, since both Steam as Epic Games Store Yes GOGinclude cloud storage for most of their games and where the progress of titles we have purchased and/or downloaded is stored.

However, while GOG and Epic Games do not specify the maximum space available, on Steam we have this figure: 100 MBample space since the size occupied by the progression is very small.

Back up Steam games

However, it is possible that after many years the space reserved to continue storing content has reached its limit, which can only happen when we have stored a large number of games, which is common in games where it is necessary to save games. back save progress continuously to avoid losing all inventory as well as progress.

How to free up space on Steam Cloud

Data from saved games of video games that we have installed is stored at both local as in the cloud. This way, not only can we continue where we left off once we reinstall Windows, but it also allows us to continue progress on other computers with the same Steam account.

The problem is that we cannot access Steam Cloud like any other storage platform and delete the stored content. To free up space we have several options.

  • The first goes through delete manually the oldest games we have stored directly from the game, provided this option is available.
  • The second is to delete the games stored on the computer and wait for them to be sync with Steam Cloud. The problem is that this process is not as simple as deleting the directory and that's it, since Steam downloads them again to the computer.

The first thing we need to do is go to the game properties and uncheck the switch available in the Steam Cloud section to stop synchronization. Then we close the Steam client.

Disable Steam Cloud

Once we have disabled Steam Cloud we need to access the directory where games are saved, the default is Program files (x86) / Steam / user data

Inside this folder, there is a folder with a number that corresponds to the ID of our Steam account. When you access its interior you will find the folder of all installed games. The number of each folder corresponds to the game ID.

To make this tutorial, I use the game Limbo. In this case, the ID is 48000. To delete progress in the game, simply select the folder and delete it. Once we delete the game folder, we open Steam again and activate the game again. Stream Cloud sync.

At this moment, next to the button Playa warning triangle will be displayed that invites us to click to resolve the problem. The problem is that the data stored in Steam Cloud is not the same as that stored on our PC. This window invites us to choose the data we want to save.

Steam Saved Game Conflict

To delete the data stored in Steam Cloud we must select the second option Local storage. In this way, all the content stored in Steam Cloud will be replaced with the new one, which does not include progress in the game, thus eliminating all the space occupied by the stored games.
