Throughout its history, Apple has been characterized by being one of the first to adopt a certain technology, however, this has not always gone well. If we’re talking about some of Apple’s biggest failures in recent years, we have to talk about the MacBook Proespecially the model launched in 2016. What seemed at first to be a spectacular product soon turned out to be quite the opposite.
Why is the 2016 MacBook Pro the worst Mac ever?
The MacBook Pro 2016 was one of the most anticipated devices among Mac users, as the previous generation lagged behind in practically everything, especially in terms of power. Apple, which was already under the leadership of Tim Cook, wanted to make a clean sweep by completely changing the design. In addition to design, Apple introduced 4 important changes which, spoiler, went wrong and we detail them below.
Touch bar
One of the most characteristic and striking elements of the MacBook Pro 2016 was the Touch Bar, a OLED touch screen which replaced the keyboard’s function keys to display functions that developers needed to implement in their applications.
The Touch Bar was proposed as a way to increase productivity, however, even developers were not willing to adapt their applications (although many did) and users were not happy that the Touch Bar Escape key would disappear from the keyboard. This touch returned to the MacBook Pro range with Touch Bar in 2019. With the renewal of this range in 2021, this OLED touch panel has completely disappeared from the equipment.
No USB-A or HDMI ports
This is undoubtedly one of Apple’s typical moves when it comes to forcing users to use a certain technology that was not yet widely used as is the case today with the USB-C port. This MacBook model hit the market with 4 ports Thunderbolt 3 USB-C.
There was no USB-A portso if you needed to use one of these connectors, you had to carry a HUB or dongle to convert the USB-A port to USB-C and be able to connect it to the computer.
Apple bet everything on the USB-C port, both for transferring data and for charging the device and sending the signal to external monitors, so it also gave up on the HDMI port. The renewal of this 2021 range has reintroduced the HDMI port. However, the USB-A port never returned and will soon disappear from the lineup as well. Mac-Mini.
Keyboard with butterfly mechanism
One of the biggest complaints from users, besides those already mentioned, was about the keyboard. Apple launched a new type of keyboard with a butterfly mechanism, a keyboard that quickly began to present operational problems, leaving the keys functioning completely, replacement being the only solution, a replacement that exceeded 300 dollars.
But worst of all, Apple replaced the keyboard, even though the device was under warranty, claiming it was user misuse. This caused a wave of lawsuits against the company that users ended up winning and Apple had to return the money paid for them. replace keyboard.
Farewell to MagSafe
As we mentioned above, Apple was betting everything on USB-C, a bet which currently makes much more sense since the use of this connection has been standardized. The 2016 model of the MacBook line also removed the MagSafe charging port, a magnetic port designed so that if the cable was pulled, the device would not lag.
Instead, you had to charge the device using one of the USB-C ports. Once again, Apple took longer than necessary to recognize its mistake and reintroduced it in this range during the 2021 renewal.
