Loki will return for a second season and will likely focus on the next big MCU villain.
It’s been a while since the show centered around the trickster god aired, so if you’re keen to find out when the show will return and what it will be about, read on. You can also see our thoughts on the first episodes in our Loki review.
Loki Season 2 Potential Release Date
Marvel originally confirmed that Loki would return in Summer 2023. However, the Disney+ release date has since been changed to “coming soon”.
A later release date may make sense, given Secret Invasion won’t be released until June 21, 2023. The Cosmic Circus claims the release window is around October 2023, but this has not been verified.
Loki isn’t the only Disney+ Marvel series to be delayed — Ironheart, Echo, and What If…? season 2 also received the same treatment.
Is there a trailer for Loki season 2?
Not exactly, but there’s a brief rundown of the series in this sizzle reel for the 2023 Disney+ slate:
What is the plot of Loki season 2?
Spoilers for Loki’s first season below.
Of all the MCU Disney+ shows in 2021, Loki is arguably having the biggest impact on the franchise. It’s because of the reveal of The One Who Remains, played by Jonathan Majors.
If you’re unfamiliar with comic book lore, He Who Remains is a twist on a villain called Kang the Conqueror. Kang has many versions of himself across time and is generally determined to dominate them all.
The version Loki and Sylvie encountered in the Citadel at the end of time most closely resembles Immortus, a relatively righteous version of the character who just wants to bring the timeline back to an orderly form, hence his creation of the TVA and the lie on the existence of the Keepers of Time.
By doing so, he would prevent the timeline from branching out and, therefore, prevent an all-out multiversal war from occurring between the various Kangs. He knew everything that was going to happen before it happened, right down to his conversation with the two variants of Loki.
Sylvie decided that the mysterious man could not be trusted, while Loki believed he was telling the truth. The two fought, and it looked like Loki was about to convince her of her way of thinking – but then Sylvie distracted Loki with a kiss and sent him to another timeline and killed The One Who Remains Her- even.
Kang the Conqueror was the main villain of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, but we think his role is even bigger than that. We could be looking at the next Thanos, a villain that will transcend many Marvel movies and shows.
Head Writer Michael Waldron explains more about Kang in an interview on Marvel’s website: “Knowing that Kang was probably going to be the next big crossover movie villain, and because he’s a time-traveling multiversal adversary , that has always made a lot of sense.
“I came up with this great Multiversal War mythology and pitched it in the room one day to our producers. And they said, yeah, let’s go. We knew we were going to end up meeting the man behind the curtain.
When Loki returned to TVA, in a shocking twist, it emerged he’d been sent to a completely different timeline – one where his old friend Mobius hadn’t even recognized him, and where a large statue of Kang stood. right in the middle. , where the Guardians of Time statue stood.
Everything the Remnant warned of seems to have happened. The timeline has branched out over sixty times according to Mobius, and in the version Loki reverted to, Kang is a ruthless leader.
Because we now have multiple branches of time, this version of Kang is different from the one that appears in Ant-Man. It’s likely that we’ll see many versions, creating an endless villain that can appear in many scenarios. This new villain blew the MCU wide open.
But what about the other characters in the series? Judge Renslayer set out to find out who was responsible for creating chaos on the Sacred Timeline. Whether her search will lead her to Kang remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Sylvie has been left behind at the Citadel after killing The One Who Remains. After betraying Loki, we imagine a reunion between the two might not go so well next season, despite their rather strong and unique bond.
The second season will likely see Loki try to return to the timeline with the Mobius he knows and attempt to restore Kang’s order. The latest images show more variants of Lokis entering the fray and the trickster falling through the air.
Footage from D23 has revealed that a bunch of Loki variants will all team up in London, and Loki and Sylvie will reunite at a record store.
Additionally, the post-credits scene of Ant-Man 3 showed a variation of Kang called Victor Timely. He performs on a stage explaining how important time is in everyone’s life and how it can be shaped.
Watching from the audience is none other than the god of mischief, Loki. He’s sitting with his TVA buddy Mobius, who seems to doubt he’s a “terrifying character”, but Loki simply replies “he is”.
Some new merch images from Amazon France (as spotted by The Direct) show Mobius in a new mech suit and confirm that Hunter B-15 will be back.
Loki Season 2 Cast and Crew
So far, the following cast members have been confirmed to return: Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius, Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie/Lady Loki, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Judge Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B -15 and Jonathan Majors as Kang.
Ke Huy Quan also joins the cast – he is best known for playing Waymond in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. In footage released exclusively for D23 attendees, he appeared as the owner of some sort of futuristic store.
It would also be great to see the other variations of Loki return – including Richard E. Grant as Old Man Loki, Jack Veal as Kid Loki, and Deobia Oparei as Boastful Loki.
We also expect Michael Waldron (head writer) to return, but we don’t have any confirmation on that yet.
Unfortunately, showrunner Kate Herron will not be back. Herron gave an interview to Deadline stating that she only ever planned to work for one season and had other projects in the works to work on instead.
The majority of Season 2 episodes will be co-directed by Moon Knight’s team, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. They have previously worked together on Somewhere in the Dirt, Spring, The Endless and Synchronic.
