Microsoft has launched the new Surface Laptop 5 with a few new features, but undoubtedly the first thing you need to know is that despite the advances in the AMD Ryzen 6000 chipsthe next generation of equipment will rely solely on Intel Core processors.
Specifically, the new generation of Surface 5 Laptop now features 12th Gen Core chips, also offering much faster Thunderbolt 4 connection ports. The only real change is the new, more striking colors in the finishes.
Externally, the Surface Laptop 5 is still as sleek as the previous generation of Surface 4 Laptop, whether you choose the 13.5-inch model or the larger 15-inch model. The screens have the same resolution but add Dolby Vision HQ for HDR.
What’s new in Surface Laptop 5?
The keyboard is still excellent as well as quiet. Nothing has changed and it comes with either an anodized aluminum platform or the stunning Alcantara-like soft-touch finish. Unfortunately, that’s only on the smaller model, which also lets you go green.
Already on the left side of the computer, we find that it has a USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 port, a new addition that allows the management of up to two 4K monitors via a single cable, which is very good for those looking for a larger work desk. .
The handy USB-A port is also back to support older devices or to be able to play any USB key, as well as the headphone jack that remains there. For its part, on the right side is Microsoft’s patented port, the Surface Connect.
Both speakers use gaps in the keyboard to redirect sound towards the user, while the 3:2 display (slightly higher resolution on the 15-inch model) is a split option that blends in with the rest of the Surface range.
As far as user experience goes, let’s say this is a laptop for all sorts of tasks. If you liked the previous models, you’ll like this one (unless you were hooked up to this AMD CPU hardware).
And if you haven’t, there’s nothing here to change your mind. Microsoft’s styling remains beautifully understated and includes features that showcase Windows’ best features, such as Hello face unlock and Surface Pen support.
Over time, you can also replace the internal SSD, which is becoming a rare option in ultraportable computers on the market, which is a plus if you need to expand your storage.
As for the battery, Microsoft points out that you’ll be able to tackle 18 hours of use in the 13.5-inch model, and curiously only 17 hours in the 15-inch version. Both are more or less in line with last year’s models.
