Motorola could be about to drop a bombshell on the flip smartphone market as rumors suggest the company is set to reveal not one, but two new Razr foldables – and one could get a pretty drastic redesign.
Here’s everything we know so far about the Motorola Razr 2023 – rumored to be called the Razr 40 – and the rumored Razr 40 Ultra too.
When will the Motorola Razr 2023 be released?
Motorola has now officially teased a Razr launch event on June 1posting a teaser on Twitter that shows two foldable silhouettes, seemingly confirming speculation that a pair of Razr models are on the way.
Note that this was shared by Motorola’s global Twitter account, suggesting it should be an international launch, rather than a China-only launch. Whether that will include the United States or not remains to be seen.
The previous version of the flip phone, the Motorola Razr (2022), was released in China in August 2022, but only arrived in the UK in December and never made it to the US.
How much will the new Razr 40 cost?
No official pricing has been announced at the time of writing, but leaks have started hinting at the price we can expect for both models.
First, SamInsider reported that the standard model – which will likely be called the Razr 40 – will start from $899 (around $975 / £780), for a version that includes 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. .
The same site previously reported that the Razr 40 Ultra will come in at a much higher price of $1,200 (around $1,300 / £1,045) for the same RAM and storage.
These prices essentially make the standard model a close competitor to the Oppo Find N2 Flip, while the Ultra is even more expensive than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4.
For reference, here’s how much the previous two models cost in the UK and US:
What features will we see in the Motorola Razr 40?
From what we’ve seen, there will be two very distinct phones in the Razr 40 series, so let’s take them one by one.
Before that, on the name: early rumors pointed to names like Razr 2023, Razr Lite, Razr+, and more, but all the latest leaks settled on Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra, so we’ll use those for the moment.
Razr 40
The standard Razr 40 is oddly the phone we know less of the two, with most of our information coming from a single major report.
This comes courtesy of MySmartPrice, who have shared what they claim are official Motorola press renders of the phone:
They sport a design reminiscent of the latest Samsung flip phones, with a small cover screen next to the two cameras, used for notifications, selfies and basic widgets.
The phone is covered in a vegan leather finish and comes in three colors, which SamInsider says will be named Vanilla Cream, Sage Green, and Summer Lilac.
Unfortunately, concrete details on specs beyond that – be it screen size, chipset, camera hardware or whatever – are thin on the ground, except for the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration mentioned above.
However, we know a lot more about the Razr 40 Ultra and expect some of its specs to apply here as well.
Razr 40 Ultra
This phone has leaked more, and it’s not hard to see why: it’s the most exciting model.
The Razr 40 Ultra isn’t just a new model for Motorola, but also a massive change for foldables, as just about everyone agrees it will be the first flip phone to have a screen on the entirety of one of its exterior sides. Our best take on this comes from reliability leakssharing Motorola’s alleged official renders:
There’s a lot to unpack here, but let’s start with the obvious: the cover screen.
According to XDA Developers, it’s a 3.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1056×1066. As you can see from the renders, it actually wraps all the way around both cameras and flash, giving you an interrupted – but huge – screen for larger widgets, the ability to open full apps, and apparently even the ability to play a custom game or two.
SamInsider adds that the three colors featured in the renders are officially Viva Magenta, Glacier Blue, and Phantom Black, and you can see that on the back the phone shares the regular Razr 40’s vegan leather upholstery.
If the design seems too extravagant to you, keep in mind that we have already seen it leaked by evleaks in Februaryand then again in april. We even once got a presumed glimpse of the design in real life, thanks to this photo shared by 91mobiles.
More importantly, Motorola itself teased the design on Chinese social media network Weibo, sharing this poster highlighting the 3+-inch screen on the outside of the phone (and specifying a 3.5-inch size in accompanying text).
This is what the Razr 40 Ultra looks like. But what can he do?
Well, it’s believed to be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which has since been seen in the phone in a Geekbench listing as ‘razr plus 2023’. It’s not the absolute last chip – that would be the 8 Gen 2 – but it should have plenty of power for a flagship experience.
As mentioned above, we expect it to come with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage in its starting configuration, although XDA Developers thinks it will come with up to 12GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.
The foldable internal display is expected to be a 6.7-inch, 2640×1080 AMOLED panel, and Motorola has already teased a high refresh rate, which we think means hitting the same 144Hz as on the Razr model. precedent – it’s unlikely to be a step back from that, after all.
XDA also thinks it knows what the cameras are: a 12MP IMX563 primary camera paired with a 13MP ultrawide, with a 32MP selfie camera on the inner display. It’s an odd setup, with the highest resolution recorded for the interior screen, but we’ll have to see what Motorola has in mind here.
As for the battery, MySmartPrice reports based on the phone’s FCC certification that the Ultra will have a capacity of 3640 mAh – which is quite small, although a bit larger than the previous model – on a charge. of 33W. That’s a little slow, and there’s no sign of wireless charging support yet either.
