The Razr 40 Ultra has established itself as one of the best foldable phones in 2023, combining impressive performance with excellent versatility.
Today, Motorola seems to be preparing for its successor. Don’t expect a design overhaul – more minor changes are very likely.
Here’s everything we know about the Razr 50 Ultra, which will likely be known as the Razr+ (2024) in the US.
When will the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra be released?
While we haven’t had any confirmation from Motorola regarding the release date at this point, release dates for recent models give a rough idea:
Based on last year, Motorola will likely launch the Razr 50 Ultra around June or July 2024. However, the situation in 2022 could repeat itself, when the launch outside China was delayed by several months.
If Motorola sticks to its current naming conventions, it’s likely that the new Razr 50 Ultra will be marketed in the US as the Razr+. MSPowerUser, a site that leaked a recent photo of the Razr 50 Ultra, states that “the phone will be available in the United States through Verizon Wireless, one of Motorola’s long-term partners, under the Razr+ branding.” »
How much will the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra cost?
There are no leaks or rumors regarding pricing at this point. We must therefore refer to previous models to estimate the probable cost of the Razr 50 Ultra:
Foldable phones are generally expensive, but Motorola has managed to keep its prices relatively reasonable, considering the specs of the 2023 models.
At this point, we expect the company to at least maintain the current price without further cost increases.
What specs and features will the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra have?
Although the technical specifications of the new model remain unclear, leaks of a nearly identical design suggest that Motorola could opt for a minor refresh. Here’s everything we know at this point.
Design
Last year, Motorola made a huge change when it came to the design of its foldable smartphones. The Razr 40 Ultra has opted for the look of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, ditching the previous curved design reminiscent of older Motorola Razr phones.
MSPowerUser has revealed what it claims are the first renders of the Razr 50 Ultra. It bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, especially evident when examining the front panel.
It still appears to have a sizable bezel around the screen to protect the screen, as well as a punch-hole selfie camera.
On the back, the design includes two distinct sections: an upper part housing two cameras (main and wide angle) as well as a screen, and a lower part made of a gray material bearing the Motorola logo.
This setup suggests the possibility of introducing a completely new color variant for the upcoming model. In contrast, its predecessor was initially launched with three color options: black, blue, and red (with Apricot Peach Fuzz later added to the lineup).
Interestingly, Motorola seems to have kept the design unchanged from one generation to the next. Indeed, the single image provided by MSPoweruser could easily be confused with a new color variant of the Razr 40 Ultra.
Display
Last year’s model featured a 6.9-inch 144Hz pOLED display and an additional 3.6-inch external panel. Although there is currently no information on this, we do not anticipate any changes to these screens this year.

Performance
MSPowerUser mentions that Motorola has given the codename “Glory” to its upcoming Razr flagship handset and is developing it under the model number “XT-2453-3”, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset.
In the previous model, we were dealing with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. However, it remains unclear whether Motorola will replace the Razr 40 Ultra with a successor powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or a newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.
Either way, expect flagship-level performance.
Cameras
The Razr 40 Ultra had 12MP main and 13MP ultra-wide cameras on the back, along with a 32MP selfie camera on the front. In our review, we said the two main lenses aren’t bad – solid specs, but nothing exceptional.
These are still better specs than the Galaxy Z Flip 5, especially when it comes to the selfie camera, but Motorola might be tempted to upgrade this year.

Battery charging
It is unclear whether Motorola will decide to make changes to the Razr 50 Ultra’s battery (capacity and charging speed).
Last year’s model had a 3,800 mAh battery with 33W charging. Improvements in both cases would be welcome, but are by no means guaranteed.
Software
The Razr 40 Ultra was equipped with a custom version of Android 13, bearing a striking resemblance to Google’s default version but with many additional features. So it’s almost certain that the Razr 50 Ultra will arrive with Android 14 out of the box.
Motorola also promised three major updates last year, ensuring compatibility with Android 14, 15 and 16, as well as four years of security updates.
It’s not quite software support on the level of Samsung and Google (both offer seven years for flagships), but not bad.
That’s everything we know about the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra at this point. In the meantime, check out the other best foldable phones you can buy right now.
