Not even a year ago AMD put on the market Radeon RX 7900 GREa graphic that was launched to compete in terms of price with NVIDIA's RTX 4070 (it was announced at $549 which later turned out to be around 600 dollars) and which, according to the latest available reports, has rather sold well. However, it now appears that an AMD assembler partner has stated that the Radeon RX 7900 GRE “has reached the end of its useful life” and that they will stop him…very soon, right?
This all comes from a New Zealand tech site which claims to have received a notice from a store alerting it to the situation. They also say they've heard from multiple vendors that this specific graphics card isn't coming back, meaning AMD has already stopped making it (although it will continue to receive software updates for a while).
The Radeon RX 7900 GRE, discontinued in less than a year?
If you look at any search engine or price comparison site, this chart already shows inventory issues and prices skyrocketing in some cases. In fact, only ASUS models appear to still have stock in stores, although the source claims to have contacted ASUS and the response was that deliveries are “limited” at the moment. Of course, they also contacted AMD to clarify the issue, but did not receive a response (we did the same, we will update this article if we receive one).
Searching on CamelCamelCamel, the famous Amazon search engine, what we ourselves saw is what we put in the image above: there is no stock from almost any manufacturer, the only from Sapphire but with a VERY higher price than normal… 846 dollars. In other stores like PcComponentes, they have some models in stock, like that of the XFX at 630 dollars, that of the Sapphire at 750 dollars, that of ASUS at 740 dollars or that of ASRock at 710 dollars. Apparently, at least In Europe there are no stock problems at the moment.
Honestly, we are very surprised by this information that we are echoing, and we suspect that it may be a boast from this New Zealand supplier. Of course, in these parts there don't seem to be any issues or anything that makes us suspect that AMD is going to pull the Radeon RX 7900 GRE from stores, but it could just be leftover stock that they remain. We will see, as we mentioned before, we have asked AMD and when they respond we will update the article.
The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is slightly inferior to the Radeon RX 7900 It's not that it was a commercial success, but the truth is that it's good when manufacturers do these things, because as we always say , creating competition benefits us, users, because it helps the adversary to intensify their efforts.
