Captain Pike and his crew return for another season of Strange New Worlds, one of Star Trek’s newest shows in a series of series in what is quickly becoming a new golden age for the franchise.
Strange New Worlds brings together some key players from Discovery’s second season to explore the adventures of the USS Enterprise before Kirk inherits the captain’s chair. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming season.
When is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Release Date?
Paramount+ has confirmed that the second season of Strange New Worlds will be aired June 15, 2023, with ten episodes in total. These will likely roll out weekly.
The show has also been renewed for ten more episodes, which means that we will also have a third season in the future.
It’s not the last Trek show on the way, however – we still have the spin-off Star Trek: Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh in the pipeline, and the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks will return for its third season this summer.
Is there a trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?
There’s no full trailer yet for the new season, but there’s a first look at Erica Ortega:
How to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?
In the UK, US, Latin America, Australia and the Nordics you’ll want to use Paramount+, while in Canada the show airs on CTV Sci-Fi Channel and Crave. UK Sky customers can get Paramount+ for free.
Outside of these markets, you’ll usually have to wait until Paramount+ launches where you are to officially watch the show.
If you don’t want to wait, the good news is that there’s a way to watch Paramount+ from other countries while you wait. It’ll take a VPN and a bit of effort, but it’s probably better than having the whole show ruined for you by fans from other countries.
Who are the cast and crew of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?
Here is the current list of ships from season one – we expect most of them to return in season two:
- Captain Christopher Pike: Anson Mount
- Number One: Rebecca Romijn
- Spock: Ethan Peck
- Dr AS M’Benga: Babs This time
- Nurse Christine Chapel: Jess Bush
- Cadet Nyota Uhura: Celia Rose Gooding
- Laan Noonien-Singh as Christina Chong
- Erica Ortegas Melissa Navia
In addition to the returning cast, there’s a huge addition for season two: Paul Wesley will appear on the show playing a James T Kirk after starring in the season one finale.
Wesley talked a bit more about Kirk’s role at comic-con: “We only really saw Kirk for a handful of scenes in the finale. This specific episode was pretty intense, and if you watch the original “Balance of Terror,” Kirk is pretty intense in this episode.
“I can’t wait for viewers to see another side of Kirk – and certainly not an alternate Kirk timeline, but a lieutenant. So he’s a much younger Kirk. He definitely didn’t become the Captain Kirk that we know.
Therefore, we expect her role to be more involved than just a cameo this time around.
As for behind the camera, here’s who we think will be back:
- Director: Akiva Goldman
- Screenwriter: Akiva Goldman
- Screenwriter: Alex Kurtzman
- Screenwriter: Jenny Lumet
What is the plot of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?
There’s a lot in store for the second season of Strange New Worlds. Showrunner Akiva Goldsman teased a “bigger and better” second season, with more major plot twists than we’ve seen before. The most important will likely come from the introduction of Kirk, who we believe will shake things up on the USS Enterprise.
There will be more genre episodes according to Collider. This is further confirmed by the confirmation that there will be a bizarre crossover with the Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series at comic-con. The Strange New Worlds crew will still be in their live-action forms – although Mount joked that we’ll see an “extremely buff two-dimensional version” of Pike.
At the end of last season, Number One was imprisoned for lying about being an Illyrian in Starfleet. Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers told Inverse that this is a topic that “hangs over everything.” This, combined with Hemmer’s death and La’an’s departure, will create many serialized plot threads. However, rest assured, viewers can still expect the usual weekday-style episode adventure.
Ethan Peck also teased at comic-con that there are big things in store for Spock: “…we’ll see Spock struggle a lot more with his human side. He will continue to experiment with his human emotions, and this will somehow lead to fundamental changes in some very important relationships in his life.
We’ll also see a different version of Pike in the next season, after being visited by his eldest. Mount told Esquire the following: “I would say he’s more resolute after the Season 1 finale… when he realizes there’s no honorable way out, it’s a relief. Elder Pike said it very clearly: you always have a choice. But for someone like Pike, it’s not a choice. So it’s a choice that almost makes itself, and it’s a huge relief. He doesn’t have to worry about it anymore. His job now is to make every day count as much as possible. There’s a lot of freedom there. »
