If there’s one thing to say about Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 5, it’s that it doesn’t look all that different from the Galaxy Watch 4. Overall, it features the same design and the same bracelets (but with new color combinations this time) in the same 40mm and 44mm boxes.
Of course, that’s not to say there’s nothing new in the Galaxy Watch 5.
More durable, faster, more powerful, better
Samsung has made strides in durability, with a sapphire crystal display that’s not only scratch resistant, but 60% stronger than the Galaxy Watch 4.
There’s also a 13% larger battery, which translates to an increase in overall battery life. Plus, new fast-charging capabilities mean it can reach 45% charge in 30 minutes or provide enough power for 8 hours of use after just 8 minutes of charging.
The size of the 3-in-1 bioactive sensor has also been increased to provide more accurate readings during exercise and sleep, with new body composition targets available to further enhance your workouts.
You can also choose from new watch faces, as well as an updated set of watch faces and over 80 new complications to use.
While these are practical changes, it’s not Samsung’s most groundbreaking update yet, but if I’m being honest, it wasn’t necessary.
The Galaxy Watch 4 was ahead of its time
The Galaxy Watch 4 was a smart watch impressive with much more advanced health and fitness tracking capabilities than most competitors (and that includes the Apple Watch).
I suspect it’s the fact that it’s so advanced that has kept Samsung from focusing on tracking aptitude but on improving the core pillars of the Galaxy Watch 5 experience: durability and battery life.
Take the health and fitness tracking features of the Galaxy Watch 5, for example. Using Samsung’s bioactive sensor, consisting of an optical heart rate sensor, an electrical heart rate sensor and With a bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor, the watch can provide key metrics of not just heart rate, but blood oxygen levels and even body composition.
The latter, in particular, is impressive, as you only need to use two fingers to get information on body mass, skeletal muscles, water levels and much more.
The amount of data available for the watch means the exercise tracking experience should also be one of the most telling.
It contains information on recovery time based on exercise and even the recommended amount of water after exercise based on sweat levels. Yes, I don’t think the Apple Watch Series 7 can do that…
Something similar is repeated with the Galaxy Watch 5’s sleep tracking capabilities. It does everything you’d expect from a smart watchincluding a breakdown of sleep cycles, sleep time, interruptions and even snore detection, but it goes much further.
Using your sleep data, you will be assigned a sleep profile in the form of an animal. This can help provide additional insight into your sleep patterns and will also use the data to create a personalized multi-week plan to improve the quality of your night.
Considering Apple is set to add basic sleep tracking functionality with watchOS 9, this is another win for Samsung.
If it is not broke, do not fix it
To be fair, that’s the case with the entire Galaxy Watch 5. While there isn’t much new (especially in regards to tracking), it’s still one of the smart watches tempting to buy in 2022, now with bigger battery and better durability.
It’s not enough for Galaxy Watch 4 owners to buy a new watch, but it’s an even more attractive option for those who haven’t yet invested in a watch. portable from Samsung.
Plus, those who want something completely new have the Galaxy Watch 5. It’s even tougher than the Watch 5, with a titanium body that’s twice as strong, a screen that’s 90% tougher than the Watch 4, and a battery which lasts longer. It will last over three days on a single charge.
There are also advanced fitness tracking features suitable for outdoor exercise, such as step-by-step navigation, back to start and custom training plans, all exclusive to the Pro model.
