If you've already thought: “Wow, the back of my phone is so boring”, then Infinix has something just for you. At MWC 2025, the brand has unveiled its E-Colour Shift 2.0 concept. Essentially, it is a telephone that changes its rear design on demand thanks to technology similar to electronic readers. And after doing my hand with it, I can say with confidence … it's really cool, if a little exaggerated. But I can't help but think it would rather make sense on a case.
This is not the first time that Infinix has played with color change technology, but this new iteration takes a notch. The rear plate of the phone can move between different colors and patterns in real time. There is an application powered by AI which allows you to create conceptions according to your environment, your wallpaper or even the weather. Do you want your phone to be corresponding to your outfit? It only takes a few seconds. The only warning? It needs a Wi-Fi connection to treat these changes, which seems to be a strange limitation, but hey, it is a concept.
If you prefer to keep things simple, you can choose manually from six different patterns and six color palettes, giving you 30 unique combinations. Although the color options are still a little limited, I expected it to change technology once. However, the personalization aspect is fun, and it is an easy way to differentiate your phone from the sea of boring black slabs.
But, of course, there are drawbacks. The color change area is not all at the back of the phone. Instead, it is a smaller sign surrounded by a large white telescope, which slightly kills the illusion. And while Infinix says that energy consumption is minimal (thanks to E-ink type efficiency), I would always like to see an impact on the long-term battery before becoming too excited. I would say that during the few days I had the phone, it didn't seem to make a huge difference.
This concept is built on the Infinix Zero 40 smartphone, launched last August. This means that under the hood, you look at a 6.78 -inch curved screen, a Mediatek Dimensity 8200 chipset, 12 GB of RAM and a 5000mah battery – all respectable specifications for a mid -range device. The curved rear design also helps make it thinner by hand, which is a nice touch.
Unlike most conceptual technologies that never leave the floor of the exhibition hall, E-Color Shift 2.0 is already functional, and Infinix thinks that it will be ready for a general public device as soon as possible. I would not be surprised if we saw this technology appear in a real phone in retail in the next year.
But I'm not sure it's the right approach. Most people (myself excluded, to the great horror of many) to slap a phone case at the back of their handset. So you can't really see the back. In fact, I would almost say that smartphones conceptions do not matter these days. So it seems somewhat short -viewed to make a smartphone rear that changes the design, while most would like to cover it.
Instead, this technology must be applied to a smartphone case – a bit like the concept of Infinix solar loading smartphone. In this case, people could really see and enjoy their personalized phone design, rather than covering it with silicone.
Does the world need phone back color changed by AI? Probably not. But is it a fun and unique way to add personality to your device? Absolutely. It remains to be seen whether this feature is done or not, but one thing is certain – Infinix is determined to stand out from the crowd.
