Unlike consoles, on which users can purchase games physical formatfor many years the only way to purchase PC games is digital formatby associating them with an account. If we lose access to the account, we lose all the money we have invested and it is not always possible to get it back.
You probably have a friend, like me, whose Steam account was stolen and who unfortunately has not been able to regain access, despite enabling two-step authentication.
Although it is true that it is necessary to activate this function, which is responsible for sending a code to the email account associated with the account to verify that we are the legitimate owners when we access from another PC o reinstall Windowsmany users use the same password for everything.
Using the same email password, other people's friends can access the confirmation email and, once in the account, edit the associated email.
Fortunately, Steam is aware of the problem of account theft of its platform and since there is no way for users to be aware of the problem of using the same password for everything, it offers two options to regain access to the account.
Enable Steam Two-Step Authentication
In order to recover a stolen Steam account, the first thing you need to do is enable Steam two-step authentication. To activate it, you must open Steam and access the menu Steam and select Settings.
A floating window is then displayed. Here you have to click on Security and in the right panel, click Manage Vapor guard.
In the next window that appears we can choose to receive an email with a confirmation code or to use the Steam Mobile application for mobile devices.
It is recommended to use the first option Get Steam Guard Codes from the mobile app. This way, if other people's friends have access to the email account associated with the Steam account, they will not receive the confirmation code, but it will only be accessible from our mobile application.
Recover a Stolen Steam Account
In order to regain access to our Steam account where we have activated two-step authentication via the email account, it is necessary to have previously established a telephone number in our Steam account data.
To add a phone number to our Steam account we must click on the following link, enter our phone number and press the button Following. Then we will receive an SMS on our mobile with a 6-digit code that we must enter in the next window that appears.
In this way, Steam uses our telephone number to contact us if the security of the account has been compromised, or if we have forgotten the password of the account or the associated email account.
