Additionally, Microsoft took the opportunity to announce one of the most controversial Windows features in recent years. We talk about the function Remindera feature that has received a lot of criticism for its operation and which poses a potential danger to user security despite the fact that Microsoft has made it clear at all times that the information is processed locally and not in the cloud by the company that Bill Gates founded.
What is booster and how does it work
Reminder function, available only on Windows 11 and on equipment labeled Copilot+ PCtakes care of automatically taking screenshots and storing them in a folder.
This information is analyzed locally by the Artificial intelligence Co-pilot via the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that these devices include and to which we can ask questions about the content of the stored images.
The problem and the reason for the controversy is that this function captured absolutely everything displayed on the screen, including personal information, passwords among other things, so that anyone with access to this information can access it. Microsoft has completely redesigned this feature and added a large number of security improvements.
Recall now supports AI processors from Intel and AMD
When this feature was presented, during the event jointly organized by Qualcomm and Microsoft, it was initially limited to computers with ARM processors from this manufacturer, leaving aside Intel and AMD equipment.
Besides the agreement that both companies would likely manage to limit their scope (it wouldn't be the first of its kind), one of the reasons Intel and AMD were left out was that neither manufacturer offered laptop processor compatible with the Copilot+ PC certificationa certification that requires an NPU with performance equal to or greater than 45 TOPS.
Over the months, Intel is already offering laptops in this range on the market. Core Ultra 200 Series (The 100 series does not have a powerful enough NPU to support Copilot+ PC). AMD, for its part, through the Ryzen AI 9 HX series, offers a wide range of processors equipped with NPUs to locally use the AI Recall function.
This is one of the reasons why this function is only available on computers with NPUs with a certain number of TOPS, since all information collected by this function is processed locally on the computer, and not on the Microsoft servers as we have seen.
With the release of the latest version Insider In Windows 11, the Recall function of this operating system is now compatible with AI processors from Intel and AMD.
