It is not new that ARM I have been designing for some time GPUsand we say GPU and not graphics cards because we have to remember that, for starters, ARM is not a manufacturer as such but rather designs products and “rents” these designs for others to manufacture, but on the other hand it is not the same to design a GPU as a graphics card. And this is precisely what, apparently, is going to happen: ARM would be working on the design your own graphics card to compete with none other than NVIDIA, AMD and Intel in the home PC gaming graphics card market, i.e. for our home PCs.
And well, for us, this is very good news; the PC graphics card market has been dominated for many years by NVIDIA and AMD, and to a lesser extent by Intel, which h as already made two attempts to enter but without much success so far. Having a fourth competitor can actually only bring benefits for us, the users, because if the move goes well, it could tighten the screws enough for AMD and NVIDIA to force them to step on the accelerator more and possibly adjust the prices of their products further.
ARM graphics card is already pretty close
The source of this information (which you linked at the bottom of this article) indicates that ARM has hired about a hundred chip and software development engineers in a factory in Israel to oversee a new project, which would consist precisely of creating a graphics card dedicated to the brand.
“British giant ARM is developing a graphics processing unit (GPU) in Israel that will compete with NVIDIA, AMD and Intel, sources familiar with the matter told Globes. ARM has hired about 100 engineers to develop chips and software for its graphics processing division at its development center in Ra’anana. It seems clear that at this stage, ARM would focus its efforts on the video game market and, at the same time, as in the case of NVIDIA also for the processing of Artificial Intelligence, provided that ARM decides to enter fully into this field.
ARM is not really a new competitor in the gaming market as such, since it has dedicated GPU architectures like Mali or Immortalis, used in the mobile segment.
Of course, we must remind once again that ARM is a chip designer and not a manufacturer, which means that no matter how hard they try to develop to compete with NVIDIA, Intel and AMD in the gaming graphics segment, they will need partners to manufacture and market their products, since in the current state of the market (and this is our personal assessment) we find it difficult to start manufacturing themselves, especially because they would have to resort to companies like TSMC or Samsung and as we all know, at the moment Its production is completely resumed.
