When buying a monitor we should not let ourselves be guided only by the price, provided that we are not going to dedicate it to office use, because, for a little more, we can take advantage of additional functions which will help us make the experience much more satisfying.
One of the functions that cannot be missing on any monitor that we want to use for gaming is FreeSync. FreeSync is an open source technology developed by AMD in 2014 which competes with NVIDIA’s G-Sync (launched a year later) and both have the same mission, which is none other than that of synchronize refresh rate
In this way, jerky, flickering and overlapping images are eliminated, providing a fluidity that will not be found in monitors not compatible with this technology. If we buy a monitor compatible with this technology, the most common thing is to wonder what we need to do to activate it and enjoy all the advantages it offers us and which, as we explained above, are more than sufficient to value Its availability on a monitor is very positive.
Since it is an open source project, most, if not all, monitor manufacturers focused on the gaming world implement it in their models. Microsoft also offers support for FreeSync on One, Series S and Series X consoles.
Even though it is a technology developed by AMD, this does not mean that it is only compatible with the graphics of this manufacturer, since we can use it with any graphics from AMD and from NVIDIA. In the case of NVIDIA graphics, compatible cards come from from series 10.
How to enable FreeSync on a monitor
In addition to a monitor compatible with this technology, our graphics card must already be compatible. As we mentioned above, NVIDIA graphics cards offer support for this technology developed by its biggest rival in this change, support which was implemented in 2019.
The first thing to do is to check if this function is already enabled in the monitor settings. This option is found in the advanced settings and we can identify it with the same name, FreeSync, an option that must be selected as Enabled or Enabled (depending on the manufacturer of our monitor).
AMD Graphics
Enabling FreeSync support with an AMD graphics card is as simple as going to the app settings and, from the main screen, clicking Screen. Below is the model of monitor we have connected and whether this feature is enabled. If yes, the box will be checked AMD FreeSync.
NVIDIA Graphics
To activate this function on an NVIDIA graphics card, you must access the control panel. In the right column, click on Screen then click on Configure G-SYNC then check the box Enable G-SYNC, G-SYNC support. Among the options presented below we must mark the first Enable in full screen mode.
