When it comes to getting video game adaptations right, Hollywood doesn't have a consistent track record. But in recent years, thanks to projects like Stand out, The Last of Us, ArcaneTwisted metal and The Super Mario Bros. movie. We can probably thank the creators and administrators of the above game franchises, many of whom participated as producers and co-creators, for ensuring that these adaptations of their work were treated respectfully.
But we've also seen more mixed results, with less prominent customizations like border areas, Secret levelAnd resident Evil make it to our screens.
2025 will be another test for Hollywood, as the coming year is packed with film and television adaptations that we're both excited about – and perhaps a little worried about. But with the bar set high for many current TV series and films, we hope the video game companies involved will demand nothing less than the best.
Here's a look at what's coming in 2025.
Coming to HBO sometime in early 2025 The Last of Us Season 2 begins by adapting the events of Naughty Dog's video game sequel, an epic far too eventful to fit into just one television season. The Last of Us Part 2 (the game) touches on some dark, extremely graphic events, some of which are so shocking that they are likely to make audiences cringe – and probably more than a little depressed. But the quality and reception of the first season of The Last of Us It's almost a guarantee that it's a well-made TV.
Season 2 of The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie. New to the cast this season are Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac and Catherine O ” Harah.
Warner Bros. and Mojang's decades-long journey Minecraft is finally hitting the big screen – and the early reception seems to be, well, pretty mixed. A Minecraft movie may be the biggest unknown of 2025 when it comes to a successful video game adaptation. The Jared Hess-directed film takes the silliest of approaches, although some of the gags (“As a child, I longed for the mines”) show great self-awareness. The film's blocky aesthetic feels both authentic and a little off, and it's hard to say at this point if that's the case A Minecraft movie will resonate with the kids who love it, or if internet grumblers are right, this is a major failure.
Will Jack Black as Steve be enough to carry the Minecraft movie? The Super Mario Bros. movie Level of success? We will find out when on April 4, 2025 A Minecraft movie is coming to cinemas.
Devil May Cry Series creator Adi Shankar is co-responsible for Netflix's solid animated series Castlevania and seems pretty passionate about bringing Dante to the small screen. So, we are confident that Shankar will get enough DMC to make the anime series another success.
While his version of the demon slayer Dante seems pretty authentic, Shankar calls Devil May Cry more than just an adaptation. He calls it a “personal love letter to Capcom,” meaning he brings in influences from the publisher's entire catalog of games. Hey, it worked Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remixan unexpectedly good twist on Ubisoft's properties.
Whatever you think about director Simon McQuoid's attitude Mortal Kombat When the game released in 2021, it was undeniably missing two big things that define Mortal Kombat: this current Mortal Kombat tournament himself and lovable Hollywood asshole Johnny Cage. Mortal Kombat 2 will pack in both missing pieces, and we can't wait to see how Karl Urban develops as Johnny Cage.
Almost the entire cast of Mortal Kombat returns for the sequel, including the dead. That means Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero and Hiroyuki Sanada as a scorpion. There's also a huge list of newcomers, with Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.
Mortal Kombat 2 coming here on Oct 24, 2025.
Christophe Gans, director of the original silent Hill Film, gets another breakthrough in the franchise in 2025 Return to Silent Hill. This time Gans adapts the story of Silent Hill 2 – what was already was successfully relaunched in 2024 with an outstanding video game remake. It will be difficult to compete with another iteration of the same material.
Return to Silent Hill will be Gans' first film in more than 10 years. The adaptation stars Jeremy Irvine (warhorse) as James Sunderland, Hannah Emily Anderson (The Purge) as Mary and Evie Templeton as Laura, reprising her role as that character in the film Silent Hill 2 New edition. And yes, Pyramid Head is back too. But there is no release date for this game yet…
PlayStation 4 game Until dawn was like a playable slasher film where player choice and reaction time tested the player's ability to survive pursuit by a bloodthirsty killer. Now this interactive story is being adapted for the big screen by director David F. Sandberg as an “R-rated love letter to the horror genre” (Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!).
The original Until dawn featured real Hollywood talent, including digital versions of actors Hayden Panettiere, Rami Malek and Peter Stormare. Until dawn (The film) will star an entirely new cast of potential slasher victims hoping to survive a night in a remote ski lodge, although Stormare reprises his role as Dr. Hill will repeat. Sandberg says the casting is his Until dawn The film doesn't feature the same characters from the game, so it seems its attempt to tell Supermassive Games' horror story will be slightly different. But as far as we know, this is not NoticeMulti-ending style film.
Until dawn will be released in theaters on April 25, 2025.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2
Scott Cawthon's kid-friendly horror game and Blumhouse Productions' filmmaking style appear to be a perfect fit based on 2023 box office returns Five nights at Freddy's Film.
