The Scream franchise returns next Friday with the release of. back Scream, the confusingly titled fifth film in the legendary meta horror franchise. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette take on their roles as Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley alongside a new generation of survivors terrorized by yet another Ghostface killer while Ready or Not Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett take over the helm of this latest installment following the death of series creator Wes Craven in 2015.
It is not an exaggeration to say that the legacy of the Scream franchise is inextricably linked with the resurgence of slasher horror films in the late 90s and the advancement of the genre to this day. While it is certainly not the first franchise to parody the tropes of cinematic horror, the success of Craven’s 1996 Original and its subsequent sequels in the decades since then has spawned both imitation and reinvention.

Evil dead 2
At the same time a sequel and a gentle remake of the original Evil Dead, Evil dead 2 finds Lazy Everyman Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) in a cabin with a new group of survivors when they are forced to fend off an onslaught of dead unleashed by the lazy magical powers of the Necronomicon. With a bigger budget, upgraded special effects, terrifying horrors, and a completely deranged Ash swinging a chainsaw on his wrist stump, Evil dead 2 is a horror film that manages to shock while winking at its audience. -AT THE

Freaky
Happy anniversary of your death Director Christopher Landon tries his hand at the body swap subgenre with his 2020 slasher comedy Freaky with Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton. A twist on the premise of Crazy Friday, the film revolves around a teenage girl (Newton) who accidentally swaps bodies with a middle-aged serial killer (Vaughn) and has to find a way to repent without being murdered herself. As Roxana Hadidi wrote in her review for Polygon: “Freaky has dedicated itself to the cheeky overturning of genre conventions, with a final act that delivers one last bloody thrill […] amusing and bloody enough to still be an entertaining slasher movie that has its own satisfying twist in the final-girl trope. “AT THE

Ready or Not
Samara weaving (Three billboards outside of Ebbing, Missouri) Stars in Ready or Not as Grace, a newlywed bride who finds herself in the middle of a deadly game of hide-and-seek staged by her in-laws. Forced to hide in the labyrinthine corridors and secret passageways of the family mansion, Grace thwarts repeated attempts to save her life while searching for an escape route and eventually turns into a ruthless survivor who kicks off her would-be hunters turns. The weaving here is phenomenal with a performance that deserves the title “Scream Queen”. Given that directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are directing the fifth Scream film after Wes Craven’s death in 2015, it just seems right to watch Ready or Not in advance of this new episode. -AT THE

The return of the living dead
A spiritual sequel and satire from the 1968s Night of the Living Dead, Dan O’Bannons Return of the Living Dead brought new life (pun intended) to the zombie horror genre, introducing the idea of the brain-eating undead capable of sprinting after their prey while interspersing generous slapstick humor, punk aesthetics, and lewd nudity. The film follows an awkward warehouse worker and his assistant who accidentally release a deadly biochemical gas that can revive the dead. Add to that a motley crew of criminal teenagers, impressive special effects and a rocking soundtrack, and you have horror comedies that are more than worthy of their cult status. -AT THE

Scream
What better way to prepare for 2022 Scream than to return to the beginning? Wes Craven’s meta-horror original is widely known for revitalizing the ailing slasher genre when it first swept the screens in 1996 while paving a new path forward. The decades-long battle of Sidney Prescott and Co. against a number of imitators of Ghostface killers would not have happened without the immense success of the original, so it only makes sense to pay your respects to the original before you watch the series. fifth entry. -AT THE

Tucker and Dale against evil
Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine star in Eli Craigs Tucker and Dale vs. Evil than the eponymous Tucker and Dale, two sociable backwoodsmen who find themselves in a mess after bumping into a group of scary college students while camping in the woods. A variation on horror classics like The hills have eyes and evil Dead, the strength of Craig’s film lies in the way it undermines the expectations of genre tropes for maximum comedic effect and transforms what at first glance appears to be a horror scenario into a comedy of failed communication that is comparable to that of a Looney Toons sketch, albeit with path more blood. –AT THE
