Anime Spider-Man meets GTA in Wild trailer for Ananta

Project Mugen was revealed again 2023 as an open-world fantasy role-playing game about people with superpowers who investigate strange anomalies that threaten their urban paradise. Think Genshin Impact in Manhattan with Spider-Man-like traversal. On Thursday it got another incredible looking trailer and a new name.

Project Mugen is now called Ananta when it launches on PlayStation 5, PS4, PC and mobile devices sometime in the future. It still looks beautiful. At first glance it doesn't seem different from miHoYos Honkai: Star Rail and the recent influx of other big-budget, anime-style gacha RPGs, but even if it looks like “another one of those,” it looks like a damn good one.

Run down in between X-Files– In addition to supernatural events and fighting monsters, there is platforming, street racing and lots of mini-games. The game's developers from NetEase and Naked Rain promise a combination of kung fu movie action and everyday city socializing. Today's trailer also starts Pre-registration for the game, which I suspect will have some closed and open betas leading up to release.

Ultimately, however, it won't matter how good Ananta looks and feels like its nice world and cool designs are in service of an all-consuming gacha grind, as all major free-to-play blockbuster RPGs seem to be doing at the moment. Honkai: Star Railwhich seems very similar in many ways, is a good game as long as you don't mind constantly automatically fighting your way through hordes of enemies to fill all the meters you need to actually keep up with the progression.

We'll find out where on the grind vs. microtransaction RNG spectrum Ananta drops when it finally arrives, which will hopefully be fairly soon.
