Another great game from Xbox

Many games play in America, but only a few really feel American. And I don't mean that most play patriotism or red, white and blue banner. I mean, even though they use the landmarks, stars and cities in the country and even refer to its politics, they do not really deal with American culture. South of midnightA new Xbox action platform is now different.

Developed by Compulsion Games, South of midnight Integrates American culture, myths and stories from the south in a way that only have a few games before. Not everything is pretty. Much of it is sad and painful. This is just the reality of American history. South of midnight Don't be afraid of anything. Instead, it shows breed, slavery, poverty, generation trauma and death. Due to its rich, complex, often painful history, the south has developed a unique, beautiful volcroric wall carpet of high stories, heroes and monsters. And South of midnight You can literally weave this wall carpet over a 12-13-hour single player adventure through its mystical but grounded spin on the American south.

In South of midnightYou play as a young black woman named Hazel Flood. She is a talented athlete who consumed a mother with the help of abused children. While this causes a drama between the two, she still takes care of her mother. When a hurricane washes his trailer down the river, Hazel chased and is in a strange and magical version of the south, which with evil ghost monsters named Haints called Haints who linger in our world after someone has suffered a lot.

Fortunately, very early in the game, they find that Hazel is something special. She is a weaver, a person who can see the threads of reality and can weave the space and time with magical artifacts like sewing needles. The last weaver that existed was a former slave who helped other slaves to escape their gentlemen and find freedom. Throughout the game, Hazel learns more about her strength and her connection to the world about this woman and her journey to help a single family escaping slavery.

Of course, this is a video game, so Hazel's newly discovered weaving forces enable her to step into her ass, jump into duplicate and solve puzzles. Unfortunately here is here South of midnight deals a little.

The game in the game is always in closed arena-like rooms, in which enemies spawn for a while until they defeat them all and can “pop” a cursed piece of the world and free themselves from the encounter. You do that a lot in South of midnightAnd it is repeated quickly, partly because every fight feels the same and also because the fight can be served, but not much more than that. You can avoid, you can invoice some attacks, and you have a stun and some upgrades. If you have played a video game in the past decade, none of it will be terribly exciting or unique. It is not bad per se, just stale and easily the weakest part of South of midnight.

Hazel's Weaver skills are more fun when they platform and solve puzzles, and I wish it would be more in the game and less of the more than 100 arenas that they have to fight through to reach the end. This is a large combat arena that has left a sour taste in my mouth.

Here, however, the thing is: in the end I really don't care that the fight is just going on and maintenance. This is because everything else in this game is so good that I can overlook some boring powerful parts.

The world of South of midnight is beautiful. The stop-motion-like animations of characters and stands help to sell the painted, handmade feeling of every level in the game. Every place in South of midnight is meticulously detailed and covered with small touches – like animals in the distance or screaming cicadas – that immerse yourself in the lively, stylized panes of the game of the deep south of the game. And not all swamps are.

South of midnightThe places are very diverse and offer disgusting places such as a city that is flooded with pane water and cool forests that are covered with abandoned company cities and slave quarters. And during her trip, incredible lighting makes every area clear, from sun -drenched levels that are hot and humid, to creepy swamps that feel claustrophobic and dark. I spent a lot of time in South of midnightStop and take screenshots of every level. And I expect I'm not alone.

Another important part of South of midnightThe charm is its wonderful and very southern music. Many levels in the game offer songs with texts that are directly related to the mythical or supernatural unit or creature with which they deal with all on the real southern folklore.

Some songs, Like a twelve dolly parton-like diddy about a massive gator called Tom-theStuck with me days after playing. These songs lead from Country to blues to jazz and banjos, acoustic guitars, texts on heaven and hell and folk singer, who sometimes pull out depressing allegories about the past. It is different from every video game soundtrack that I heard this year, and it will stay with me long after I went to other games.

South of midnight It will be a game that I predicted that some people will bounce off after just a few hours. A big reason will be that the fight is not to be written at home. And the first levels, although they are beautiful and full of great melodies, are not as exciting as what gives them more skills after the game, like a double jump.

But if you can go through some of these problems, what you will discover is a wonderful and warm adventure through American history and the southern folklore, which is different from any game that I played. Like the south itself, South of midnight Is a chaotic, complicated, but often beautiful and passionate thing that it is worth experiencing.
