There are not many characters in a universe like Saw Gererera. That has been true since then when he chasttered into the scene Rogue oneAnd since he went to the top with Luten Rael Andor Season 1, but only in this last batch of Andor Episodes that we were really pure, unfiltered Saw. And thank God for that.
[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for Andor season 2’s second arc, which is episodes 4-6.]
As with everyone Andor ARC, in episodes 4, 5 and 6 of season 2 there is a lot going on. But by far the wildest action is Wilmon's, where he has commissioned Sawa's ruthless rebel band of rebels on how to use a complicated fuel extractor. Wilmon teaches one of Saw's men to use it, and all with the threat that Saw Sawing Wilmon could kill himself if his tutoring is done. Instead, Wilmon is briefly subsumed in SAWS Crew and receives a seat in the front row to the strangest and creepiest member of the rebel alliance.
Up to this point in the show and in Star Wars as a whole, SAW was talked about both terror and the contempt for the rest of the rebellion. We know that he is a loose cannon who is not trustworthy to follow orders, and we know that he will not stop at anything to advance his own vision of the revolution, no matter how violent, and even suggests Luten that it is dangerous. But as much as we always heard all of these things about SAW – from the video games to always Rogue one in addition Rebel Animation series – we have never really seen them for ourselves.
Wilmon's short time with saw in these episodes is absolutely scary and wonderfully calculated. Saw knows that his call for brutality is preceding him, so he puts on Wilmon to teach his crew how to use the fuel extractor, and let everyone involved see that Wilmon is dead as soon as the lessons are over. It is an extremely tense, almost exhausting act that you can see through on the show, as we see how Wilmon can think about how long he can keep the lessons to save himself.
But the whole thing that turns on a cent with the turn that recognized his own husband as a traitor is exceptional, a few minutes of narrative investment, which reveals an incredible amount of SAWS cunning and cruelty.
Of course, the real highlight for SAW is its absolutely rude scene with Wilmon on the fuel extractor in Episode 5. SAW explains his own history of origin, which has almost worked to death and in a field of poisonous vapors that was practically developed to kill the men who are forced to work there. But Saw did not die. He fought. He breathed the vapors until it felt as natural as air and let it trigger anger and rebellion in his heart. It is a great story of origin that fits perfectly for one of the most memorable characters in all Star Wars.
In this incredible moment, SAW becomes not only one of the best characters of Star Wars, but also the character that best represents what the franchise can make so special. SAW is really scary, a ruthless rebel master, a guerrilla fighter who not only feels comfortable with brutality, but rates it. It is also likely that he kills his friends or enemies, depending on what helps him achieve his goal faster. It is also constantly high on the steaming of the space jet brille. Andor Recognizes what the Star Wars universe makes extraordinary: its wonderful contradictions. The saw is alike frightening and cartoonistic; It is a perfect fusion of radical revolutionaries in real life, which happens to lead a gang of rebels that contains A Giant polar bear -shaped alien with a machine gun.
This is what Star Wars does from its best side and eliminates the border between stupid and incredibly until the two ideas have completely disappeared and have left room for something very unique. It is Lukas who destroys the Death Star, who shoots with your eyes closed and trusts the strength; It is every other character that knows that a small green puppet is the strongest Jedi. It is a small anakin Skywalker who turns into Darth Vader; It is Plo Koon and Lightsers, General Grievous, and Darth Maul and Han Solo grumbling “I know” in response to “I love you”. Andor is the first and only Star Wars project that fully records this since George Lucas himself left the franchise. Everything is ridiculous on paper; They are ridiculous concepts that should never work. In practice, however, Star Wars are the shaking frost that you get gas from listening to Gerrera Huff and scream that revolutionaries are “the thing that explodes when there is too much friction in the air.”
