The new Borderland The film received miserable reviews by fans and critics alike. One major complaint is that the PG-13 film lacks the blood and violence found in the M-rated games. However, according to a person involved in making the live-action adaptation, there were many gory moments filmed that didn’t make it into the final cut.
Borderlandnow in cinemas, has received a flood of negative reviews. It debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a terrible O%, which since then increased to 6%
In a new interview with Screen Rant, BorderlandStunt coordinator Jimmy O’Dee confirmed that they shot the film with the intention of receiving an 18+ age rating.
“We always knew we were going to get either an age rating of 15 or R (in the UK it’s 15) for a slightly more mature audience,” said O’Dee. “So we blew people’s heads off. And we cut off their feet. We did all that.”
O’Dee reiterated this point, saying, “But the idea and the brief was literally a bloodbath, cut off the head, cut off the feet” and he and the crew were told to “do it” and everything would be sorted out in post-production. But then something changed and Borderland was PG-13.
“But you know, there’s a lot going on,” O’Dee said. “We shot this almost three years ago or just finished it. I guess there’s a lot going on in post-production and they’re seeing where it’s going and what market they’re targeting.”
You may be wondering if famed horror director Eli Roth held back on set. According to O’Dee, that wasn’t the case at all, as Roth ramped up the brutality during production.
“It was funny. He was in the second unit, he’d come over and he’d say, ‘Uh… just cut the knuckles off. Yeah, get the knife and cut the knuckles off, you’ll have these stumps.’ Sometimes he just didn’t have enough blood.”
But it seems that the superiors have decided that the best chance Borderland would be if it was PG-13 and more accessible to younger people who might enjoy the games. However, considering much of it was filmed, Eli Roth’s involvement, and the lackluster reviews, I wouldn’t be shocked if an uncensored version of the film came out in the future with more blood and extra scenes to make some more money off this failure.
