Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was released 19 years ago and is one of the greatest multiplayer shooters to come to PC. Unfortunately some younger readers may never have had the pleasure of playing it as it was never released on Steam. Til today!
Note that the game has been available elsewhere all along – i.edeveloper Splash Damage hosts it on their website and even made a guide to show you how to play it in modern times
If you’ve never played it, this game was/is amazing, which is a big reason why people are still interested in this release almost 20 years later. It is set in World War II and pits an American team against the Germans. It accommodates up to 32 players (16v16) who can then split into smaller groups of four for better communication.
Communication was great, classes were nice and balanced, but the real star of this game was its cards. There was a wonderful flow to them, with objectives that needed to be completed before everyone embarked on a new set of things to attack/defend, and Seawall Battery (above) wouldn’t just make it into my top 5 multiplayer map list of all time standing, it would be very close to the top.
Why the game wasn’t on Steam yet, who knows! One could speculate that his absence is due to Zenimax having no interest in releasing and maintaining an old free-to-play game on the platform. Now that Zenimax, aka Bethesda play well with Steam and publish all their old games on the serviceHowever, enemy territory also appeared.
