Voltes V. has an interesting history in the Philippines. President Ferdinand Marcos banned the anime in 1979, claiming it was violent and harmful to children. However, there is speculation that the motivation rains deeper.
“The show’s formula took the Philippines by storm and apparently hit not only Filipino children but adults as well,” wrote Tony Montemayor in The Filipino star. “The show also had a strong revolutionary undertone at a time when Filipino student activism was bubbling back to the surface.”
After this non-violent revolution in February 1986Voltes V returned to Filipino television with new localized dubs in the decades that followed.
