For the first time ever, a Discord server has attracted over a million members, with the platform’s official Snowsgiving 2021 milestone today.
There are, of course, a number of caveats. This is an official Discord thing, so they can do whatever they want with it and raising the cap is something they do for a stunt (there are freebies on the server), no cap they will raise for everyone (although you can imagine that this is also an element of stress testing for future events / situations).
And it’s completely useless! Anyone who’s been on any size Discord will tell you that once they get to a certain point, they stop being and becoming useful chat places matrix-like, text waterfalls tumbling down a screen faster than anyone can keep up (a big reason why they will never be a suitable substitute for forums).
For reference, when I jumped in to check it out, there was almost 130,000 People online and on the server. I was able to move my mouse wheel and scroll down the list of members for what felt like an eternity without reaching the end. Conversation is impossible in such a situation, even if you are searched to speak, the main chat slowmode is set so far into the distant future that it won’t work (I was told 30 minutes but others are told so 6 hours
If for some reason you want to jump in and check it out – maybe you like snow, maybe you think you actually have a chance to win the things they are giving away, maybe you just want to be a silent and tiny part of Discord Story-you can find the server here.
