Last year's remake of Dead space proved to be a critical hitwhich revives the popular space horror series after it lay dormant for ten years. Although it was the second best-selling game in January 2023 (behind Modern Warfare II), this apparently wasn't successful enough to satisfy EA, and this was reported in April this year that the studio had shelved a remake Dead Space 2although EA denied at the time that one was ever in the works. We've now found out that it was an attempted pitch by the original creators Dead Space 4 Earlier this year it was immediately rejected by EA.
In a recent interview (well, it was three weeks ago, but we're all just now realizing that), three members of the original Dead space Team – Glen Schofield, Christopher Stone and Bret Robbins – spoke with YouTuber Dan Allen (Thanks VG247) about the franchise, which saw the trio announce a fourth entry in the space-based scare 'em up to IP owners EA earlier this year. But it seems like there isn't even room to try.
With AAA games reaching budgets in the hundreds of millions, the sales requirements become nearly impossible for all but the largest franchises. Dead spaceAlthough once well-known and highly regarded, it remained untouched for a decade before the remake and clearly did not live up to EA's expectations last year – so there is no longer any hope that internal studio EA Motive would continue to remake the series went out the window. But what if the game's original executive producer, creative director, and animation director all showed up and said they had the best ideas for creating a brand new game?
“We're not interested at the moment, we appreciate it, blah blah blah,” Schofield said of EA's response. All three looked dejected, making it clear how hopeless it had proven.
“We respected their opinion,” Schofield continued resignedly. “They know their numbers and know what to send.”
“The industry is in a strange place right now,” chimed in Christopher Stone. “People are really hesitant to take risks.”
But both Stone and Schofield made it clear how much they want to earn Dead Space 4. “We have some ideas!” said Schofield, coming to life at that moment.
Admittedly, original creative director Bret Robbins remained very quiet during this part of the discussion. His development studio, Ascendant Studios, has had a difficult time with EA and distribution lately. The $100 million flop in 2023, Immortals of Aveumsaw half the studio laid off, and then the rest of the company Reportedly on leavebefore teaming up with Dan Houser's Absurd Ventures for an unannounced project in September. He's obviously very busy and probably won't jump ship even if EA took a bite.
Dead space Creator Glen Schofield co-founded Sledgehammer Games and developed many of them Call of duty Entries before founding Striking Distance in 2019, which…released another game that failed to meet sales expectations, The Callisto Protocol. Since then, Schofield appears to have been working as a freelancer.
Stone joined VOID Interactive, the team that published last year, a few months ago Ready or Nota game My city described as “effective enough to disturb, but too superficial not to descend into a farce or, worse, a Blue Lives Matter cosplay with fascist undertones and alt-right dog whistles.” However, he is working with the team on “new ones projects”.
Dead spacenow exercises nominative determinism. It's unlikely we'll see any more games in the franchise any time soon. Unless of course they are people who make excellent demakes. And the ongoing story of “revenue expectations not being met” is likely to extend into 2025.
