Some classic pc games, including the fantastic and historically important Ultima underworld Series, are will be removed from GOG on June 28th. The games sell for next to nothing before they are removed.
Yesterday a member of the GOG team posted a notice that Monday, June 28th at 1pm UTC Ultima underworld 1 + 2, Syndicate Plus, and Syndicate Wars would be deleted. People who already own the games will still see them in your digital library. However, after this date it will no longer be possible to buy the titles on GOG.
As of Monday, it will only be legally possible to buy these games in EA’s own Origin store. However, Syndicate Wars In particular, it doesn’t appear to be available on Origin or any other digital storefront right now, so it will soon be almost impossible to buy and play through official channels.
There’s still a chance EA will republish these titles elsewhere, possibly on Steam or the Microsoft Store. Hell, maybe EA is going really crazy and releasing them on Ubisoft’s Uplay storefront. But the lack of information from EA about why these games have been removed or when or whether they will return to other stores, in particular, allows for the future of these classics in particular Syndicate Wars
Kotaku has asked EA for a comment.
GOG is generally a great way to get classic PC games, and it’s nice to have them all in one place. But a change of regime at a publisher or a change in business strategy is enough and suddenly these classic games can be torn from the stores. Hopefully the impressive Ultima underworld Games and classics syndicate duology will return to more digital storefronts sooner than later. It seems very strange for EA to make these old games exclusive in 2021. If you’re not in the mood for Origin, you have until June 28th to pick her up for a song on GOG.
