Since Arcus made the world in his image Pokemon With every mainline game, fans have had to contend with a huge choice: which version to get. This dilemma will remain for the latest games, Pokemon scarlet and violet, with many more unique features than usual, some of which even concern the distant past or distant future. We break down every difference between the two so you know which version to pick.
Each generation of Nintendo’s monster-hunting RPGs splits up some of its Pokemon roster, with a handful appearing in one game while remaining absent from its counterpart (and vice versa). This strategy makes some sense, if a little cynically. Making some Pokémon available in one version but not the other is sure to drive some to buy two copies of essentially the same game. Or, less cynically, it forces players to actually engage and trade with each other. But in scarlet & violetthere are many other core differences that could influence your decision, including whether you want things decorated with prehistoric themes or perhaps the distant future.
Pokemon scarlet Legendary exclusive
Koraidon (“ride-on”, geddit?) will be the motorcycle-inspired dragon animal that will be included scarlet. Like its partner Poké Miraidon, it is described as having “powers that far exceed those of other Pokémon,” but Nintendo has deliberately kept much about the two of them secret.
G/O Media may receive a commission
Koraidon, as you might imagine, is a mostly red monster sporting what no doubt looks like a pair of wheels. Wheels it… not used. Instead, Koraidon gallops on its legs, which raises so many evolutionary questions. It has a feathered appearance, a bit like a prehistoric bird. Drivable, this Legendary can also fly and
Pokemon purple Legendary exclusive
Miraidon is violetis far more futuristic, Legendary, and, as you’d expect, mostly purple. Like Koraidon, it can take three different forms (forms?) using driving mode, water mode, and gliding mode. It also has a vehicle style and also sports (albeit more subtly) vestigial wheels. It looks like the love child of Pokémon and a Transformer, with a metallic sheen and a pixel display for the eyes.
It’s unclear where either Legendary will appear in the game, as we’ll now be able to tackle the game’s Gyms in any order – maybe they’ll just trigger once you’ve done what turns out to be your eighth . Or maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll be introduced earlier to ease movement in the big game.
Pokemon scarlet Pokémon exclusivity
- larvitara rocky ground-type lizard creature first introduced in Pokemon Gold and Silver.
- pupils, the second stage evolution of Larvitar. It floats for some reason. Although Pupitar hasn’t been officially confirmed, we’re including it since it evolves from a confirmed Pokemon. (One restriction, however: In Pokémon sword and SignSlowpoke, who has been part of the series since the days of Red and Bluecould not develop Unless you bought the extensions.)
- tyrant, the final stage of Larvitar’s evolutionary chain. Unlike the previous two evolutions, Tyrannitar drops Ground-type affiliation and is Rock-Dark type.
- Stone Journera rock guy out Pokémon sword and Sign which I guess is a reference to the famous Stonehenge monument in England.
- Armarougea fire/human type brand new for Gen 9 with the appearance of a knight.
- Koraidon, scarlet‘s legendary Pokémon and cover model.
Pokemon Purple Pokémon exclusivity
- Cara Dragon-type Pokémon that made its debut in Pokemon Ruby and sapphire
- Shelgon, the second stage evolution of Bagon. The same logic that applies to Larvitar’s evolution chain also applies to Bagons.
- salamander, a dragon-flying Pokémon and the final stage of Bagon’s evolutionary chain. Some people (guilty as charged) are convinced that Salamence is the coolest Pokemon ever.
- Escapean Ice Penguin Pokémon with a giant ice cube for a face.
- Cerulege, not a relative of Honege, but a brand new two-legged Pokémon with two types, Fire and Ghost. With blades for arms, it’s a terrifying futuristic counterpart to scarlet
- Miraidon, violet‘s legendary Pokémon and cover model.

Pokemon scarlet Professor Exclusive
To the scarlet Players will be guided through their time in Paldea by Professor Sada. Given the Spanish influences on Paldea, it is no coincidence that the Spanish word for “past” is “pasada” – in other translations her name varies between other words for “past” and “ancient”, while the original Japanese olim, the Latin , is for “once upon a time”.
Sada, like her partner Professor Turo, is involved in researching Terastal Pokémon and the phenomena of Terastalization. She also appears to be dressed like a scientist the flints; ‘The Flintstones.

In the meantime, violet Players are joined by Professor Turo, the old Smoothy-Chops. Again, the Spanish word for “future” is “futuro,” and his name in the Japanese version is futu, apparently derived from the Latin word for “future,” “for futures.”
While Sada is dressed in cavewoman clothing, Turo wears a space-age bodysuit under his lab coat. He, too, studies the crystalline nature of Terastal Pokémon. Hmmmm, could time travel somehow factor into this story as well?
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Outfit exclusivity
How to set off into the world of Pokemon scarlet or violet, you will find that your own character’s clothing is determined by the version you purchased. If you get scarletYou will be dressed in orange but when you picked up violet They will be decked out in purple. Both are uniforms for the school you will attend.
However, you can change your outfits in-game once you’ve found a store where you can buy new clothes.
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Exclusively for the school
Even the school you will attend is determined by the version you buy. Your school, where you will be taught about Pokémon, is located in Mesagoza, Paldea’s largest city. However, if you get scarlet it will have a different name, emblem, and color scheme than if you got it violet.
in the scarlet, The school is called Naranja Academy and has an orange emblem with an orange spoke shape on the shield. (Naranja is Spanish for orange, of course.)
in the violet, head to the Uva Academy instead, where the emblem is purple and features some gorgeously displayed grapes. (And yes, uva is grape in Spanish.)
Funnily enough, both academies are run by the same person – Clavell – but he’ll be orange or purple depending on the version.
And why orange and not red? Well it’s Nintendo.
Pokemon scarlet and violet are poised to reinterpret other long-running aspects of the series. In a region called Paldea, inspired by the IRL Iberian Peninsula, these games are fully open for the first time in the history of the series. There is four player co-op. Gyms are backespecially with a leader Many fans are sexually confused. And instead of controversially silly features like “Mega Evolution,” some Pokémon are capable of something called — that’s a very real word, by the way — called “terastallizing,” meaning they covered with crystals and can change their type on the fly.
Updated: 11/18/2022 11:15 am ET: Spring, scarlet and violet are with us now. If you venture into the Paldea region, we wish you happy hunting. If you’re still undecided on which version to buy or if you even want to make the leap to the latest one Pokemon Adventure you should know, although the gameplay basics seem more than solid, Nintendo’s five-year-old hybrid console sure seems to be struggling with the game on a technical level.
