What is a role -playing game? You probably have your own definition and exceptions. And as you may expect, almost everyone at My city Has thoughts and opinions about what an RPG is and what is not. For example, some think that Elden Ring is an RPG. Others agree. And then some think that the idea of categorizing games over genre is a waste of time.
So the RPG/Genre debate ran under My city Employee in Slack this morning. This chat was easily edited and formatted.
Kenneth Shepard: Think of the five best RPGs from the past decade. My current tips are
- Baldur's goal 3
- Person 5 Royal
- Disco Elysium
These are my locks, I think. Does anyone have any suggestions for the other two?

Carolyn Petit: Don't think Witcher 3 makes the limit.

Caro: Soulslikes are definitely RPGs. HOizon Zero Dawn is an action adventure game.

John: So Horizon Zero Dawn counts!
Ethan per: Yes.
Caro: NO.
Zack: I personally have given up to try to actually define RPGs, since every definition has either cut out games that definitely contain RPGs or everything.
Ethan: Dialogue selection, quests and XP.
Zack: Because yes, horizon Would be an RPG according to this definition. It all has it.
John: It's very simple. Everyone just asks me and I decide.
Ethan: Call of duty Has only XP.
Zack: New Call of duty Games have dialogue options …
John: But in view of this, Kenneth's list should not be included Tears of the kingdom?
Carolyn Petit: No, this is definitely not a RPG, it is an action adventure.
Ethan: All adventures have action. Not all action is an adventure.
John: Haha, I think Carolyn has already implemented the rule “You ask me only”, but tries to hide it.
Zack: This is my rule with RPGs. I will know when I see it, etc.

Caro: Every genre has bad games.
Zack: RPG has many bad games because it has everything in these days. As we specifically determined in this discussion.

Ken: Or what if I said Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the best RPGs of the decade as an as large brand.
Zack: This is an RPG!
Carolyn: I mean you can make this argument! It is not one that I would agree with, but you can do it.
Zack: Oh, I didn't know there was a debate about it.
Caro: Oh, I'm not saying that it is not a RPG, I say it's not good.

Ethan: It is an ever-open world shooter.
John: Divinity original sin 2 And Baldur's goal 3 are definitely the two best RPGs of the past decade.
Ethan: The only answer is Witcher 3 by May.
John: Correct RPGs, none of your bloody backshit action games.
Zack: CRPGs is the term that you are looking for a grumpy man.

Ethan: Vampire survivor Is an RPG.
Ken: Yes, Divinity original sin 2 is one of the best of the decade.
Caro: Close, Pillars of eternity is much better than Diveliness niche sin 2.
John: I forgot Columns! I don't think it's much better, but it's bloody.
Zack: After all the LOL I ask: What does an RPG actually make a RPG?
Ken: It is not a RPG if I can't kiss a man or manage an inventory. Sometimes both.
John: An RPG is a game in which I create a character by selecting classes and skills (whether before the name or in any other way), then researching a story by taking over quests, fighting enemies and selecting my own way through the plot. Someone also says “ForSooth” at some point.
Ethan: An RPG must make at least two of the following: let me make narrative decisions, make quests, adapt my character, lock up some kind of ability checks or let the numbers rise. Elden ring Nails all five. It also has dragons.
Ken: Bloodborne Is on my list next to Baldur's Tor 3, Persona 5 Royal and Disco Elysium. As controversial as the categorization of this game now LMAO.
Zack: Live your truth. Genres are just another example of humanity that tries to organize everything in his infinite and unsuccessful struggle for the control of the universe.
