The ratings are in for Pokemon scarlet and violetwith many critics pointing out that the Nintendo Switch clearly struggling to run the game correct. But it’s one thing to just read about performance issues in the abstract. It’s a lot funnier to see how poorly the in-game character models overlap each other while the framerate fluctuates.
The landscape randomly disappears when you throw the Pokéball
Poké Balls are powerful enough to digitize Pokemon in their fist-sized capacities, but little did I know that they’re also capable of warping the space around them. Well, at least that’s what they did in this case and the frame rate cramped like it was in pain.
People cut through each other
There’s PDA, and then there’s literally being in each other while walking down the street. Heavens, these two need a room. Or better render. One of both.

The sandwich doesn’t even go in her mouth
I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure a sandwich should go Inside and not Next your mouth when you eat one. I’m not asking much of a sandwich eating animation. still Pokemon scarlet and violet could still let me down.
A trainer’s arms go through the… eye sockets?
Twitch streamer “Patterrz” sums it up best:
This is how you drive Koraidon correctly. If you don’t do it that way, don’t play Pokemon scarlet version and violet version correct. If your arms and fists can’t get through your eyeballs, then you’re riding a Koraidon wrong. And you should probably fix that. [breaks down laughing]
The camera occasionally loses the player
There is as much to unpack in these videos as there are NPCs that appear randomly out of nowhere. Because something like that also happened with wild Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, I’m not too shocked about it. The same goes for the terrible frame rate. What does Surprise me is the second video where the camera struggles to keep up with the player as he rides a koraidon. And it doesn’t work at all the quickly.
Schrödinger’s Pokemon
So these Pachirisu flash up and down. Oh, and your Koraidon motorcycle gets stuck in the middle of some crates.
Pokemon are stuck in a wall
It’s good that Shiny Pokémon have animated sparkles, because some of them can be stuck in walls. (You’ll have to use your imagination a little, but this is a Deino.)
Characters’ bodies stutter as they walk
So I included this video for stuttering. But what really blew my mind was how ugly this waterfall background is. This is a background you would expect from the PlayStation 2, not a modern machine like the Nintendo Switch.
Pokeballs snap the camera to the ground
In this case, the Poké Ball somehow lets the camera fly straight through the ground before finally hitting the wild Pokémon. Of course, as we’ve seen in previous Pokéball footage, the framerate is also busy dying a horrible death.
If you want to start your own collection of the worst glitches in a main line Pokemon
Update 11/18/2022 at 11:55 am CET: Pokemon scarlet or violet is now available to the general public, and players have found even more fun glitches. Here are some new ones for your enjoyment.
All trainers t-pose during a cutscene
To be fair, you had to fiddle with the contrast original video to see it properly. But according to the player, this was 10 minutes into the game. Only 10 minutes! This isn’t a random mid-game cutscene, but one of the earliest impressions players would have received scarlet and violet
The player rides an invisible legendary motorcycle
You were probably pretty excited to drive that one legendary Koraidon and Miraidon like the rest of us. These Motorbike Pokémon are the fastest way to travel around Paldea. There’s just one problem: they become invisible sometimes. So it looks like you’re just zooming around in an awkward sitting position.
Background characters or ghosts? You decide
This NPC appears to run into an invisible wall for a while and then disappears completely. spooky That would actually have been a pretty cool thing to see in a haunted house, just not in broad daylight.
School children’s legs distort the space-time structure of the universe
children in Pokemon Series are so strong. Not only do they embark on dangerous adventures and defeat adult villains as young as 11, they can also cause significant image stuttering.
The lighting changes in the middle of a cutscene
I assume the lighting was changed to make the Quaxly easier to see in the next cut. Unfortunately it happened too soon.
Pokémon float during battle and then fall off the screen
I smiled when I saw that your Pokémon could stand in the air while battling a flying opponent. Flamigo is a bird so I assume it’s plausible that it could hover? I burst out laughing when the Flamigo suddenly fell straight down the cliff.
For those who haven’t worked in game development, level designers use colliders to ensure game objects make contact with each other. It seems that the battle ground accelerator randomly decided to turn off for no reason.
Pokémon can duplicate as they evolve
So if you evolve a Pokemon you could get Another copy of it. The player notes that the duplication is purely visual, but it’s still fun to imagine the evolution becoming a buy-one-get-one-free deal, like a fried chicken shop.
