If you're like me, you're probably constantly running out of storage space on your PS5. A cool new game comes out, a huge download comes, or you suddenly feel the urge to revisit an old gem from your backlog and then immediately encounter the “Out of Storage Space” error message when you try to download and download it install. Suddenly it's time for digital Jenga and you have to figure out what you want to delete from your library. Or you could do this a quick thing and Quickly free up lots of space on your SSDmaybe even enough to finish installing whatever is stuck in your download queue.

The trick I'm talking about is to delete all of your trophy footage in the media folder. The PS5 is now over four years old. If you've been playing since launch, there's a good chance you've achieved a number of achievements in all the games you've played, and memorabilia of those milestones are clogging up your SSD. I knew my PS5 did this, but I didn't realize how much space it took up.

Luckily I came over This really helpful PSA from user wolfgang784 today on the PlayStation 5 subreddit. “I just found over 2200 videos while trying to free up space and wondering why my media folder is so big,” the thread reads. Wolfgang784 points out that the PS5 records and saves a 15-second clip of your gameplay every time a trophy appears. If you're not vigilant, all those clips can add up quickly. How to fix the problem:

  1. Turn on your PS5
  2. Go to the gear icon on the far right of the home screen to access Settings
  3. Select the save option and open the media folder
  4. Go to the trophy category, select “All” and click “Delete.”

Trophy clips will appear in the PS5 media folder.

As I said, it's a very simple solution that's easy to overlook. At least that's what I tell myself to explain why I've never noticed it before. I usually go through the albums of various games and try to figure out which precious clips I want to delete to reclaim a precious gigabyte here and there of my precious SSD space. In addition to everything else, the special trophy section of the media folder makes it easy to quickly destroy a lot of footage without having to worry.

After that, you can change the settings for recording when you get a trophy. It can be just a screenshot, or you can limit the capture to only Gold or Platinum trophies. If you are serious about documenting all of these things, then by all means keep it or move it to an external drive before cleaning. I'm away and immediately got 7GB of space back.

That's not much when it comes to huge file sizes like games Destiny 2 And Final Fantasy VII Rebirthbut as someone who's recently gone through my digital collection and downloaded a bunch of stuff I've never played, 7GB is enough to install half a dozen smaller indie games or older PlayStation classics. One day I will install a larger SSD. Until then, thank you very much, wolfgang784, for the super useful tip.
