It was an unusually difficult year for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual Golden Globe Awards, and co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler admitted it beforehand. Fey streamed the show from various coasts – Fey was in the rainbow room of New York City while Poehler was broadcasting from Beverly Hilton, California – and joked about some of the bigger Golden Globes mini scandals of the year when it opened. About this year’s editions: The nomination for Sia’s film music provoked some anger because the film had already been heavily criticized for its insensitive portrayal of autism. The nomination for the Netflix series Emily in Paris met a bit of ridicule because the show was widely hated but the usual “I don’t like this show so shouldn’t it have been nominated?” The reactions became more devastating afterwards a report in the LA Times revealed that HFPA members had been treated with a lavish junket and stopped visiting for the show.
And even greater controversy arose over the memory that the HFPA has no black members, and apparently hasn’t had one for at least 20 years. This became a particular focal point as some of the 2020 critical favorites were ignored in the nominations, particularly the almost universally acclaimed series by Michaela Coel I can destroy you.
Fey and Poehler touched all of this in passing during their opening monologue. They have done only the slightest excavation Emily in Paris
Nonetheless, there remains an interest in the Golden Globes for award watchers, who generally view the globes as a potential predictor of this year’s Academy Awards. This year’s Oscars will be presented on Sunday April 25th, and it’s likely that at least some of this year’s Globes award winners will reappear – especially those of Chloé Zhao Nomad land
