Wordl, the viral word game where you guess a 5-letter word is ubiquitous. It’s in group chats, in Slack threads, and all over social media. There is Wordl clones, and clever twists of format. Someone even created – in a big asshole move – a Twitter bot that spoiled Wordl for avid gamers.
But here’s something purer: Google, the search engine, has a cute little Easter egg for gamers searching for the game. Here, try it:
- Open Google
- type Wordl
- Press Enter
From there you will see the Easter egg in the top left corner. I don’t think this should be taken as a spoiler: the word is “Google” – yes, six letters. The little puzzle is “solved” after the animation has run through a few words: “Column” to “Goalie” to “Google”.
It’s small, but a nice little ode to the game that’s littered with green, yellow, and gray boxes all over our Twitter feeds. Wordl is free to play and accessible via browser, and the words only change once a day. Everyone has the same word, which makes sharing the game fun – which is arguably one of the reasons it’s gone viral. It’s a quick, healthy way to play a game with the rest of the world.
