Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the end of the road for this particular band of rowdy misfits, according to series director James Gunn. The upcoming superhero movie, currently set for release on May 23, 2023, will complete this team’s trilogy and story, the director said Deadline for his Hero Nation podcast
Gunn definitely said this would be the last time people saw this group of characters together, as Guardians of the Galaxy said, “This is the end for us. This is the last time people will see this team of Guardians.”
This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to fans, however. Gunn has said the third film would be over as early as 2017.
“I think the first three films tell a single story, and that story is pretty simple.” Gunn told the Toronto Sun. “I think there might be one volume 4
Of course, a lot has changed for Gunn and the film since 2017. Back then, for example volume 3
But Gunn is also aware that film trilogies come with their own baggage. “I just want to stay true to the characters and the story and give people the closure they deserve,” Gunn said on the Hero Nation podcast. “It’s always a bit scary. I’m very aware that the third movie in most trilogies sucks.”
