HBO offering free movies and shows with no subscription starting Friday

We're tired of friends telling you it's time to get David Simon's five-year love crime drama Cord? You're tired of telling your friends that they need to watch Cord so you can talk about it, tell them, "Ah, I don't have HBO?" Either way, your moment has come. HBO announced Thursday that it will make about 500 hours of its original series with licensed films available on its free streaming site, starting Friday, April 3. The content will be available “in the interim” HBONOW.com, HBOGO.com, and associated applications.

Choosing a film is obviously very selective and limited, but it's a good time to revisit the light, fun features Detector Pikachu

and The Lego Movie 2. But the choice of free TV shows is an impressive alternative to some of HBO's biggest hits, including Cord, The Sopranos, Silicon Valley, Veep, again Six Feet Down. All seasons of those shows will be available for distribution.

This goes at a time when broadcasting services are seeing a huge increase in business due to the closure of the theater, the postponement of new releases, and the isolation of the home limit the spread of coronavirus. A growing number of streaming and other subscription services are currently offering monthly trial accounts to get streaming fans in, including the horror Shudder service, CBS All Access, Showtime, Film Movement Plus, IFC Films, and others.

Here's what HBO plans to do on Friday. The streaming platform encourages viewers to look for "active stunts" around this content on HBO's media outlets, and to track and share the hashtag #StayHomeBoxOffice.
