How to Be a Parent Like a Mandalorian

Mandalorian, parent

Counterfeit entertain the viewers with its new lineline, catchy sound track, some droids and a few funny weapons. But all of that was nothing compared to The Child, which we all call Baby Yoda even though we know it indeed Yoda. The Mandalorian, it turns out, is not just another Star Wars saga in a long line of sagas. The Mandalorian is a story about being a single parent.

Mandalorian was not the first person to be suddenly thrown into the dangers of parenthood. But he did it with kindness, patience and an inner sense of what matters most when caring for a minor. Here is what Mando teaches us about parenthood.

Embrace the temporary nature of spending time as a new parent

New parents can feel frustrated at how fast their lives are going from being a wonderful mix of work, family, friends and romance to All Children, All the Time. We talk about “losing” ourselves as if it were not entirely natural for the care and well-being of a small child to give up everything else completely.

The Mandalorian goes from being a hardworking, well-respected hunter (among the top in his field!) To looking primarily to keep this little boy alive. We can talk! But we who have been there know that eventually, it will be easier and soon you will be back in action, which will please all those customers.

Love the "natural effects" on top of the discipline

Kids-pushing boundaries. How important is it, really, for them not to focus on furniture? They will skip a few more times to see. Is to throw away the toy for sure will never OK? We don't rub this one across the room to find out.

You can shout, you can send them later, either you can let them know the “nature” of their immorality. Jumping into bed with their friends? You guys need to find another place to play. Throw a plastic dinosaur to your sister, that plastic dinosaur goes away for a while.

Mando reminds us that getting natural results in life is a very effective teacher – that's why Baby Yoda is not allowed to stay near the buttons of his ship:

Kids don't really need it that many gears

Even though we know that children are very small, take up very little space and do little more than eat, sleep and soil other trash for a while, we still feel compelled to buy enough space to allow plenty of “guess we will need a bigger house” jokes in their children’s bath.

The Mandalorian goes no further than this. A fun little float dress, a comfortable blanket and a cup of bone broth once in a while are all they need.

You can't do it alone

Mando strikes me as the kind who has the most time. You may have to give up that parent when you're a new parent, but – especially if you're a single parent! You need to find your town and get it right away. You need friends; you need people to watch and play with when you have a number of activities to do.

You may even need a nurse practitioner. It doesn't hurt to have a nursing droid.
