How To Set Your Own Pokémon Hunt

Hunt, Pokémon, Set

You will not be surprised to find that, during this time of epidemic crisis, my son has disappeared Pokémon sword game on Nintendo Switch. But as we talked more and more about creatures and wars, the inspiration came to take its off-screen journey and DIY Pokémon Hunt was born.

Land of Pokémon revolves around trainers who capture creatures inside the Poké Ball. This is your first job. If you don't have a Poké Ball, you can make one. I picked up a black marker and made a straight line in the middle of the Wiffle box and then colored the top half of the red ball. (You can use any ball you have that you don't know thrown into your house or living room.)

The second step is to draw or print Pokémon pictures. If you want to stretch the amount of time involved (and the surprise item is not important), your kids can easily help with drawing and cutting. There is more online drawing tutorials you can follow along.

Next, you will want to write a book inviting your kids to where they want to be. Adventure is hard to come by these days, so keep doing some more. The book should make the region (Pokémon's place – ours was Bender-O), encourage kids to don their favorite trainers' clothes (bonus: Everyone's out of their pajamas for a while) and tell them to visit a stuffed animal for their help (the animal had a Poké Ball ready for them).

While your kids dress up, hide photos of Pokémon inside or outside your space. Insert photos at various heights (Pokémon flying can be high) with a small tile on the back.

After your kids put their clothes together and collected their Poké Balls, give them hunting rules. Our eight- and 10-year-olds had to stand six feet and throw Wiffle balls into Pokémon's pictures. It took 10 minutes to regain the "catch" of Pokémon by hitting the paper.

When the hunt is over, add it to the writing exercise or to a brief tutorial on the software: Your kids can look for the creatures they catch on Pokédex (rolodex of characters). In this case, a sheet of cloth or a short tutorial on Google Sheets will do the job.

Keep the fun allowing them to add to their Pokédex for the next hunt – our second hunt was held just a few hours after the first hunt. And make sure you wish them all the best in catching them all.
