Naughty Dog, the developer behind it The Last of Us, Unexplored, Jak & Daxterand the original Crash Bandicoot Games, finally revealed what has been in the works since then The Last of Us Part II launched in 2020. The game is called Intergalactic: The Heretical Prophet and it's coming to a PlayStation 5 near you. We saw that first trailer for it at The Game Awardsand in the days since, more details have emerged through interviews, blog posts and social media. Read on for a recap of everything we've learned so far about Naughty Dog's next game.
what is Intergalactic: The Heretical Prophet around?
Intergalactic is about a space-flying bounty hunter named Jordan A. Mun who gets stranded on a planet called Sempiria. Communication with the planet was not possible for over 600 years, and during that time no one has left its orbit. Jordan goes to Sempiria in search of members of the Five Aces crime syndicate, apparently because she urgently needs the bounty. They appear to have a story, as on Jordan's ship we see a photo of her and what appear to be other members of the group, although the details of her relationship with them are unconfirmed. Once she reaches the planet's surface, she will face hostile robots and likely other dangers.
That's the core of what we know about the main plot, but as it relates to the larger world Intergalacticexplained director Neil Druckmann The New York Times that Jordan's story will also focus on a kind of fictional religion and examine “what happens when you trust different institutions.” Druckmann also said that Intergalactic is set in an alternate future where space travel was fairly advanced in the 1980s. That's why you'll notice several retro-futuristic elements in Jordan's spaceship, including a CD player on which she plays “It's a Sin” by the Pet Shop Boys and a CRT television on which she watches anime.
IntergalacticThe reveal trailer definitely feels like it's cut from the same cloth Unexplored And The Last of Us in terms of it being a “prestigious” cinematic, story-driven game, and Druckmann says much of the team's inspiration came from anime Akira And Cowboy Bebop. Fans have even noticed that some details in the trailer appear to be homages Akirafrom Jordan's red jacket to the CD player in their ship.
Who is involved?
While we only know the broad outlines of the game's story and haven't seen any actual gameplay yet, we do know a number of the key people involved Intergalactic. Druckmann is the creative director, having directed both The Last of Us games and Uncharted 4with Naughty Dog veterans Matthew Gallant and Kurt Margenau both serving as game directors.
Jordan is played by actress Tati Gabrielle, who Naughty Dog fans may recognize from her role in the series Unexplored film as mercenary leader Jo Braddock, a character who somehow felt like a stand-in Uncharted 4 And Lost legacyThe antagonist and ally Nadine Ross. At the time Intergalactic is out, fans will probably know her even better since she plays Nora The Last of Us' upcoming second season.
Besides Gabrielle, we know a few other actors who will appear in Intergalactic. Halley Gross, the co-author and narrator, continues The Last of Us Part IIwill play AJ, Jordan's agent, as seen in the announcement trailer. The big sick guy And Eternal Actor Kumail Nanjiani will star as Colin Graves, one of the five aces Jordan is chasing. You better call Saul Actor Tony Dalton also plays a member of the Five Aces, but the character's name is currently unknown. Troy Baker, who plays Joel The Last of Us games and James in the HBO seriesis too confirmed to play a character in it Intergalactic.
Finally, the duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross compose music for the game. The two have written countless film scores over the years, including some of the most recent standout films challenger And Strange. This is the first time they have worked together on a video game score.
What is the plan for the future?
Druckmann said The New York Times that Naughty Dog was restructured as an “IP powerhouse.” redundancies last year, and the studio is aiming for it Intergalactic becoming a major new franchise for PlayStation. Whether that comes to fruition or not will depend on how the first game performs, but given Sony's penchant for merging games for spin-offs and external media, I wouldn't doubt Sony wants that Intergalactic to spawn sequels and perhaps some TV or film adaptations. Naughty Dog is already here Presenting the game as a “franchise” So the official announcement says that the expectations for this game are pretty high. We'll see how this all plays out sometime in the coming months or years, as we don't know when at the moment Intergalactic will actually make its way to our PlayStation 5s.
