Last weekend the first Fourteen days-like trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy, another “finale” avenger– Similar trailer for Black Widow with a new release date and the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards. As if that wasn’t enough, we saw loads of movies, shows, and cartoons over the weekend!
Check out the latest superhero animated drama from Amazon Studios Invincible took up a large portion of our weekend, as well as sitting for a MonsterVerse marathon of the films that led to Warner Bros. ‘latest kaiju free for everyone, Godzilla versus Kong;; Better call Saul;; Gargoyles;; and more. Here are some of the shows and movies we love to see right now, and what you might also like to see.
Invincible
Late on Saturday night, I spent 45 minutes reading the Criterion Channel app trying to find something my wife and I could agree on. When we settled on a few possible choices, it was bedtime for her. So I did a full 180 ° on Sunday night – I suggested we watch the TV adaptation by Amazon Studios Invincible, which she describes as her favorite comic of all time (she has the first eight hardbacks from the Ultimate Collection).
I knew very little about it Invincible I was definitely not prepared for the level of Gore by the end of the premiere, which I haven’t seen since … maybe when I watched it Ninja scroll in college? So far – we’ve seen the first two episodes – it seems like the show is using this type of ultraviolence wisely to demonstrate that (A) people with superpowers have the ability to do some really messed up things, and (B ) It would be pretty terrible to face alien invasions as a teenager, even a superpower!
Neither of us loves animation, which, as our own Joshua Rivera described it, “sits in an uncomfortable space in between Young justice-esque Saturday morning cartoon and increased flash web cartoon, ”but the art style definitely looks the same as Cory Walker’s work in the comic. And if Amazon is striving for nothing more than an extremely faithful adaptation that doesn’t really go beyond the comic, then there’s nothing wrong with that. I am definitely inclined to look further. But producers have to work hard to make sure the 40- to 45-minute episodes (the same length as an hour-long TV show with commercials) don’t feel bloated. – Samit Sarkar
Invincible is available for streaming Amazon Prime Video.
And everything else we see …
Gargoyles
I spent a good portion of my time this weekend revisiting the first season of Gargoyles on Disney Plus. Why? Because it’s great, that’s why. The animated series by Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man, Young justice) at the center of Goliath (voiced by Keith David), the surviving leader of a race of creatures who turn to stone during the day and reawaken in the modern world after a century alongside his small clan, has been one of my favorite shows since I was a kid. The series was a trailblazer thanks to its focus on serialized storytelling, strong characters, and intriguing storylines that interwoven nocturnal vigilante superhero tropes with characters and plot devices inspired by Shakespearean literature and European fantasy lore. Gargoyles has also stood the test of time and absolutely deserves a contemporary remake or sequel. “Gargoyles is still my baby,” Weisman said in an interview with Polygon last year. “Literally, nothing would make me happier than going back and doing more Gargoyles. “Ball is in your yard, Disney. – Toussaint Egan
Gargoyles will continue to be streamed Disney Plus.
All MonsterVerse reboot movies
After watching Godzilla versus Kong On Friday I wanted to learn more about Kong and his relationship with the child who can communicate with him. My partner and I hadn’t seen Kong: Skull IslandSo we activated that and hoped to be informed. Well, that’s not what this movie is about. Instead, it takes place in the past when Kong was younger. Either way, it’s definitely about Kong’s relationship with humans. To like Godzilla versus KongIt’s a ridiculous movie – in a good way – that just got it right. Then we decided to watch Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, to. If I had been looking ahead I would have seen them all in turn, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. And it ruled! It is so satisfying to see monsters beating each other. – Nicole Carpenter
All MonsterVerse reboot films (Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla versus Kong) are available for streaming HBO max.
Rabbit-proof fence
Phillip Noyce made a name for himself with high voltage thrillers Patriot games
Like Noyce’s previous films Rabbit-proof fence is built like an uncomplicated thriller. Sir Kenneth Branagh, who speaks volumes by taking on the role, plays the British fool in charge of social engineering with cold deceit. He barks commands to his silent child hunter Moodoo, played by famous Yolngu actor David Gulpilil. But most of the action takes place from the perspective of those on the run, the kids that Noyce perfectly casts. Everlyn Sampi is a discovery as the eldest sister and de facto protector who evokes palpable bravery at key moments in the heart-wrenching, unimaginable wandering. For someone who didn’t grow up with much insight into Australian history (and according to anecdotal accounts, actual Australians may not know the extent of this harrowing point in time), even the plot from A to B to C to D. from Rabbit-proof fence hits hard. It’s a powerful film that just exists. – –Matt patches
Rabbit-proof fence is available for rent Amazon and Apple.
Better call Saul season 5
I missed that breaking Bad Prequel series when it first aired and have caught up in the past two weeks. I won’t tell Better call Saul
And this is the time of year when everything seems to go to hell. Jimmy has finally dropped his first name for the character of Saul Goodman, and the show’s other star, Goodman’s Art-Partner-Art-Girlfriend-Art-Only-Girlfriend Kim Wexler, realizes she can. No need to further break down the difference between a hard-working corporate attorney and a part-time scammer while also considering pro bono cases. After the past four seasons, we’re finally seeing their alliance take them to places that could do real, permanent damage.
Better call Saul was the perfect show to see how I prepare for my second dose of the vaccine and think about re-entering the world. This is a series about who we are, who others expect us to be, and who we want to be. We know where a lot of these characters end up, we’ve seen their end breaking Bad, but I still hope Kim Goodman’s toxic gravity can somehow escape. She still has a chance for a good life. I am not sure about anyone Better call Saul. “Ben Kuchera.”
Better call Saul will continue to be streamed Netflix.
Young justice (again)
A month ago I wrote in this room about finally digging into the belated but welcome season 3 of Young justice. After so many miniseries of 10 or 12 episodes, it was strange to go back to something that is 26 episodes, but the makers are certainly doing a lot with that run time. I lost about a third of the focus on the show – as I said at the time, the season didn’t seem to have a central plot, and while I praised the sprawling and detailed cast, the show kept adding characters until none of them were very important seemed. But after about 18 episodes, the intentions of the season suddenly become clear: It’s about a youth culture revolution.
In a pretty sharp echo of current American politics, Young justiceThe adult world is hopelessly entangled in hypocritical political twists and turns, selfish agendas, and party political deadlock. (That’s mostly a supervillain stalemate.) But idealistic young people can get around all of this by streaming their exploits on social media sites and directly inspiring their peers to end the media and politicians who paint them as vigilantes . A bit cheesy, except for the part where similar non-super tactics have worked repeatedly in the real world. It was a relief to see the show pull itself out of the discomfort of “We can’t do anything because the politicians won’t let us.” This also happens when Beast Boy goes into a joint state and hallucinates due to the hypnotic commands in VR glasses a musical Teen Titans go! /. Doom Patrol Crossover. – Tasha Robinson
Young justice is available for streaming HBO max.
