When it comes to handheld games, you can drown in the number of options from which you can choose. The best way to narrow down things is to consider what you are looking for from a handheld. Would you like something palm size that can easily slide into a front pocket? Or are they cool with something larger that can be thrown into a pocket while they are still viable for daily use? It is fair to say that the ROG allied, for example, is not exactly something that you want to carry around all the time, but its raw strength makes up for these disadvantages.

But what if you are looking for something that can act as a jack-of-all-trade trade that is able to keep a large group of games without the huge footprint of a steam deck? One of the best options in this front is the Retroid Pocket 5, but even this critically recognized device has some disadvantages. The all-glass front means that you really need a bulky housing to keep the device safe in a bag, and its ergonomic design makes long-shaped dual analog games quite cumbersome. Well, Retroid is back and seems to have tackled some of these problems with the Retroid Flip 2.

The internals, screen and buttocks of the Retroid Flip 2 are identical to the popular pocket 5. However, it is the external attention. After all, it is a clamshell. The design obviously hears back to the Nintendo DS, and like this device there is no real need for a separate protective sleeve for the flip 2. In my two weeks of the test, I did not threw this thing in my pocket with no concern that the screen would be messed up. It is great for peace of mind and at the same time ensures that I don't have to carry a ton of mass around.

The Clamshell design offers another advantage. Since the entire lower half of the device is devoted to the keys and sticks of the flip 2 of the flip 2, there is a lot more space to make everything ergonomically better than in the pocket 5. Most smaller handhelds usually have analog or D-pad playing, but the flip 2 is the first smaller device that I used back and after the analogy stick and after the D-Pad in the middle of the game in the Middle can. The off-set controls are an enormous relief compared to the almost convertically stacked controls of the Retroid 5.

Nevertheless, there are disadvantages of the Clamshell design that prevent it from being more comfortable than, for example, a steam deck or a traditional controller. Since the device actually has to close itself, the analog sticks must be pulled in in small divots, which makes them feel a little less precisely. Despite the divot, they have the same area of movement as a standard -related analoger stick, but there seems to be a slight decline in accuracy. However, if you don't worry about the competition game with this device, you shouldn't have too much trouble here.

The other ergonomic problem in which you may meet is that the flip 2 like the DS is usually flat on your back, which is simply not as pleasant to keep as something that forms a little more into your hands. I came across similar problems for the first time when I recorded a Nintendo Switch 2, for example. But compared to hand cramping, I tried to work analog games on the retroid pocket 5 and found that the flip 2 was much more comfortable.

For some time now I have probably not known whether the hinge on the Flip 2 is able to start hundreds, if not thousands of openings and closures. The hinge on the Nintendo DS finally got a treacherous wobble when the consistency of his plastic was used. Retroid has experience with Clamshells and has revised the original Retroid flip after serious problems of durability. I hope that the Flip 2 will take at least several years.

Unfortunately, I could take a few years for me to wait until I test another handheld in China, where Donald Trump's tariff policy has made this device expensive for those who live in the USA. But for everyone else you will be happy to know that the flowering period of the Clamshell is in a great way again.
