Notice the DOOM villainous, for which Bethesda has issued a cease and desist? Its creators applied reluctantly, but not before infusing the spirit of this project into a modern spiritual successor. This game is Jupiter hell, it’s finally no longer Early Access and it is very Good.
In case you forgot, this is the name of the game Jupiter hell. It is based on the work done for Doom RL, a DOOM-themed roguelike that has been online since … well, 2003.
Aside from the long delay in Zenimax’s legal department, Jupiter hell always looked sick. From an isometric / top-down view, the game played very much like the DOOM board game
Here is the original Kickstarter trailer:
And here is what Jupiter hell looks like now.

The whole game plays like a traditional roguelike, which means that there is no mouse control. However, you can play with a controller and it will work great good with it. But if you’re looking for a new game that runs neatly on a laptop or low-end machines, Jupiter hell is one hell of a rabbit hole.
Aside from moving around with the keyboard / gamepad and picking up objects, there are quite a number of classes that you can specialize in. Right from the start, the game gives you the choice between marine, scout or technician, all of whom have very different characteristics and skills. From there you can specialize in over 20 roles or even collect points if necessary. All of the properties also make a huge difference.
That Design really rewards patience and foresight. Instead of moving back and forth, you have a wait action that will make you crouch down, improve your aim, and decrease your chance to hit. You can then boost this with additional traits, not to mention additional relics, head armor, body armor, and other inventory.
And while everything underneath is a very traditional roguelike – shotguns require reloading per Bullet – You can walk around the map in real time by simply holding down the arrow keys / controller. Some levels result in a lockout that lasts a certain number of seconds, which basically means you have to work through about 180 moves.
The entire curved CRT design is super matching too.
With all of the ambient interactions, available weapons, combinations, and the low hum of metal in the background, anyone who likes DOOM, traditional roguelikes, or tactical games like XCOM will benefit from it Jupiter hell. Even the user interface is reminiscent of these classics Doom RL, Villain-Era days with the ASCII indicators. Each run takes about 4 hours once you get used to it, although these runs are always of good intensity.
It’s an absolute gem and one that has flown completely under the radar. You can still grab it 20 percent discount on Steamwhich is about $ 29 for Australians. Super good value for the time you get off it, especially when you start out on the harder runs.
