It’s May 12, 2023 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom On the day of publication, the temperature in New York City is dangerously close to 90 degrees. In Midtown, bankers are sweating through their Brooks Brothers shirts and pants while tourists have unpacked their cargo shorts. As I exit the subway station near Rockefeller Center, I’m smack in the middle of a huge line of people. I chuckle assuming that’s it insanely long Nintendo Store series over a block away that our Editor-in-Chief Carolyn Petit saw this morning (I hate the idea of standing in lines) but no, the Jonas Brothers are on Rough Trade.
The Week in Games: Return to Hyrule
Monday 3:53 p.m
Hours later, I sit down in the blazing sun to charge my battery and notice that the front of the Nintendo store looks strikingly spacious. I walk over and see if I can get someone else a copy my city
At irregular intervals, a large gap filled with corpses marks a driveway, and a few security guards keep it open to passing cars. Multiple future Tears of the Kingdom Owners are excited to play Nintendo Switch. A woman sits on the sidewalk in shorts, a New York taboo.
“Oh fuck it,” I murmur before walking back out into the dry, freezing air of the G/O Media offices. I may not be tall zelda Fan, but I don’t think there’s anything in the world that would make me wait in line for hours in the midst of a midtown Manhattan heatwave.
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Lines feel very nostalgic
Despite my beliefs, I’m fascinated to see people waiting in lines like this all across the US breath of the wild Consequence. It feels like a bygone gaming era has returned – the last time I attended a game’s midnight launch was November 2012 Halo 4
The need to wait in long lines for game releases at midnight has disappeared over the years as more gamers turn to digital storefronts and downloads to get a new game as soon as it’s released and the need for physical media diminishes. (Although the page The impact of moving to full digitization was felt in the loss of access to so many films Science fiction thriller strange dayswhich for a while could hardly be viewed without a physical DVD, only became available to stream this year – and will no doubt make an impact on games soon.) In 2012 you couldn’t play Halo 4 in any way different than on the two Discs that came in the Master Chief emblazoned case, but that’s just not the case now.
Why is Tears of the Kingdom That brought the lines back so strong? Finally, the Nintendo eShop is open 24/7, you can now download the game without having to stand for hours browsing every 10 minutes or so minutes a few centimeters closer to the shiny glass nintendo sdoors torn open. you can play Tears of the Kingdom At that moment, prolonged exposure to stagnant New York City air filled with exhaust fumes is not required. Why, people in line, don’t you do that?
For many, the promise of a special swag is enticing. The Nintendo Store has special edition pins (and other “surprise gifts”), many of which will no doubt end up on eBay for thousands of dollars. In the meantime, Target has a fanny pack that people freak out about. The allure of impossible-to-obtain loot will always draw players, a group well known as completers and collectors through and through.
But maybe, despite my decidedly Grinch-esque attitude towards waiting in long lines for a video game, people still enjoy queuing Tears of the Kingdom for the mood, y’all. You’ve waited six years for a sequel breath of the wild; What’s more than a few sweaty hours, especially in the company of die-hard fans?
