Last year in the allocation my top 10 games of 2020I thought I was naughty. See, Hades, which was officially released on PC and Switch in September 2020 was so transcendent that I just had to give up all ten places. Supergiant’s ever-popular roguelike hit PlayStation and Xbox this year, so technically it’s a game for 2021 – and please trust me when I say I really, Yes, really Just wanted to change the date and heading this old article and republish it. A good deal. Also an honest piece.
But when we’re real, it’s also a little lazy. Hades came out last year! And had an early access buzz for years be fore that! Last year was brimming with great games, many of which deserve to be celebrated. You avoid them in favor of a game I’ve already praised it
The door of death
The door of death is a master class in elegant game design. The isometric dungeon crawler developed by Acid Nerve (known for Titan souls), no pixel is out of place. The door of death shows you where to go but does not give you an explicit direction, teaches you how to fight but not how to win, and is haunting and unforgettable beautiful on every mile. The door of death Skilfully masters the hat trick, making you feel like your instincts have taken the wheel, even though the road is really meticulously laid out for you.

The door of death
Really, if there is one game that I regret not having devoted more coverage this year, it is it The door of death. Part of that could be the reality of the business where a writer spends much of their time working on articles with the widest possible reach. But most of it is undoubtedly the result of splashing The door of death– how it showed up, had its zeitgeist moment and moved on. In order not to exceed its reception, good grades are appropriate.
The door of death
At first glance, struggles in The door of death is like any other indie action game over the last decade. Then your arsenal will slowly expand, unlocking new strategies and the occasional showdown. A memorable battle set on a frozen pond lets you use a grappling hook to dash from bank to bank and dance across the ice as you slit your enemies. Optional boss fights reinforce your skills, such as turning a boring old fireball into one that does sustained damage over time.
The door of death
The magical system in The door of death counterintuitively forces you to use your weapons. Every spell you use (arrows, fireballs, a real explosion of a bomb) removes a knot or two of your magical meter. To refill it you will have to land melee attacks; one hit corresponds to one node. By design, The door of death makes sure you play with all of its tools.
The door of death
Esthetic, The door of death is on its own level. Yeah, it’s damn beautiful, with a subdued art style that speaks for itself. But that’s complemented by a soundtrack that’s so catchy that if you repeat it that many times, you could effortlessly burn a hole through the record. (By the way “The old watchtowers“Was one of my most played songs on Spotify this year.)
The door of death
The door of death clocks in for most players, by a dozen hours. I finished it in a little under 10 even though I’m only 77 percent done so I can come back later to mop up the rest of the collectibles. More shorter games, please!
The door of death
The best aspect of The door of death is also the worst: you get lost all the time. Without navigation tools like a compass or map, you have to move around the world like you were living in a decade before Mapquest: by relying on landmarks and a general location of the country. Bitpart characters offer wide headings. And you can always refer to the signs posted at intersections. (A sign of the game’s attention to detail: if you hack up a signpost with your weapon, cut the text in half as well. The sign still shows the bottom half of the letters. A piece of wood on the floor will show the top half.)
The door of death
The prefixes of The door of death are all, many of them, irresistibly charming. It’s not just the gravedigger who sleeps in a two-meter hole that he made himself. It is the cursed knight to pass his days with a pot for his head. (Guess his name.) It’s the cephalopod who is desperately pretending to be human, but it is, so obviously not human. It is the murder of crows occupying an agency tasked with guiding souls into the afterlife – a task where one cannot help but laugh.
The door of death
Of course, Acid Nerve made a name for itself in 2015 Titan souls, a game about fighting bosses. The boss is fighting in The door of death don’t disappoint, but few excel in a devastatingly creative late-game fight. While most boss fights are fought in tight arenas, this one is limitless (although it’s a design trick, of course). It’s all presented in a bold black and white color palette except for the hits you land, which are rendered in vibrant fuchsia. And no spoilers here, but in terms of the emotional impact, all I can say is: Oooof

The door of death
You might feel that The door of death is little more than a rock solid action game, and yes, it is. But beyond that, The door of death has a lot to say – as meditating on life and loss, on accepting when your number is exceeded, on grappling with the cold truth that life is finite, and on the soul-changing realization that you are spending your time against the inevitability of fighting leads to nothing but a broken heart. Heavy stuff for a little crow.
Mandatory “Honorable Mentions” section
Hitman 3 set a new standard for modern stealth games and be the funnest game at the same time … maybe ever? Guardians of the Galaxy the mediocre action more than makes up for with a gripping plot anchored by a razor-sharp script. return covered the kickass action front (while she also kicked my ass). Last stop, a narrative adventure game, kept me on the edge of my seat. Scarlet Nexus and Stories from Arise both scratched the long unattended stories Itching, although I wish Bandai Namco put this off for at least a year. The puzzle games unpacking and model challenged the heart as well as the head. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has done the seemingly impossible feat of easily engaging newbies into a range of action games that began in the Paleolithic. Still working my way through Mass Effect Legendary Edition, but that was one hell of a fun trilogy to go back to (in crispy 4K, too). Sun ash got me utterly confused, but in the two months since I rolled the credits, I haven’t stopped thinking about what is more than I can say for most games. It’s really amazing how many genres are packed into this co-op play It takes two. For a fleeting moment, I sat on top Skate city‘S global leaderboards. Forza Horizon 5 let me go zooooom. In six weeks I played, uh-oh, 135 hours Halo infinite.
