While the game’s take on Lego Super Mario is constantly expanding with new and increasingly complex playsets, more traditional Lego sets inspired by the red plumber are fairly rare. However, we can expect a new set featuring a cape-clad Mario on his trusty mount Yoshi to join the Lego Super Mario catalog on October 1. The $129.99 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi set isn’t quite as cool as the Lego Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block or as iconic as the Lego Nintendo Entertainment System, but it still includes some fun features and surprises.
Normally, pre-orders of new Lego sets are only possible through Lego’s online store, but this 1,215-piece set can also be reserved at Goal before the launch on October 1st.
These flat, pixelated Mario and Yoshi are based on the 16-bit versions that first appeared in Super Mario World for the SNES. The base of the set features a small crank that, when turned, animates Yoshi’s legs and arms, while a dial behind Yoshi’s head animates his mouth and tongue. Just like the Lego Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block and The Mighty Bowser sets, Lego Super Mario & Yoshi also includes an Action Tag that provides unique reactions for Lego Mario, Luigi or Peach figures.
