Magic The Gathering’s next wild crossover is with Monty Python

As someone who is less familiar with Magic the GatheringI continue to be fascinated by the constant flow of crossovers of the card game. They range from the easy-to-play to the unexpected delights, such as Lord of the ringsS, evil Dead, Hatsune MikuAnd Street Fighter all decorate MTG. Still, given the many unexpected crossovers, I don’t think anyone could have predicted the latest collaboration: Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The crossover with the classic 1975 British comedy Film, as revealed by IGNis set to release on July 29th in the form of two Secret Lair drops with a total of nine cards. As expected, the nine cards are full of incredible art and loving references to the film’s many quotable lines and beloved characters. Each card is essentially a specially designed version of an existing card in MTG. For example, the card “Tis But a Scratch” with the picture of the film Black Knight Having his arm chopped off is a substitute for dismemberment. How fitting.

For me, the best card of the collaboration is the Swallow, which plays off a running gag from the film where the characters discuss the difference in flight speed between the African and European Swallow. The card is double-sided, one African and one European, so you can decide which species you prefer to play with. Ultimately, though, the European and African Swallow cards function in the same way.

Like the rest of MTG‘s collaborations, bringing characters from film, television and video games into the card game, the Holy Grail Cards are part of the Universes Beyond series. This just means that the crossover cards are not legal for use in Standard MTG Games. I can only imagine that this is better, because if I have a Magic the Gathering game and someone starts playing it Holy Grail cards, I would only find myself down a rabbit hole of quotes from the movie, to the annoyance of everyone around me.

If you are at the San Diego Comic-Con from July 25th to 28th, you will find the foil version of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail Crossover drops.
