Nintendo just announced that the next game coming to the Nintendo Switch Online library will be 2000 Classic The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.
Given that the original N64 version required that console’s physical expansion pack, it’s fitting that it also fits into the more expensive modern Nintendos Expansion Pack tier of its Switch Online subscriptions, joining its predecessor The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the service.
This news follows yesterday’s announcement that Banjo Kazooie also came for expansion pack subscribers, although its release wasn’t quite that far off; It should be out and available by the time you read this.
If you’re a little rusty Majora’s mask, She could do a lot worse than revisit Heather’s excellent 2020 retrospective on the game:
What is heroism? Is it to defeat Ganon and save the princess? Not always. Sometimes it calms a crying baby. Other times it’s a final jam session with the band. The good that is achieved in Majora’s mask is often fleeting. But while it’s a game ready to wallow in pain and fear, Majora’s mask
never suggests that those moments are any less good than saving the world. That’s an important message, and an important one at that Majora’s mask told with just a few mechanical tricks ocarina of time. Many of the assets are recycled, Zelda only makes an appearance in a brief flashback, and while you end up saving the entire world, much of the gameplay focuses on fleeting sidequests. It would have been just as “easy” to give the players “ocarina of timebut more.” To make the world a little bigger, bring Ganon back to life and let her storm the castle. Instead, players got something else: a remarkable experiment that was still magical, but much more personal. Remember two decades later Let’s remember the transformations and the crazy moon, but it’s important to also remember the lesson: doing good every day is just as rewarding as saving the world.
