Wario is a scammer. Sure, that’s part of his notorious personality, but in Mario Strikers: Battle League, he literally picks up the ball (with his hands!) and hurls it at goal. I will not call myself a football expert. However, I’m pretty sure this is a violation of every rule book of any professional organization.
This is far from the most egregious offense in football Mario Strikers: Battle League, a sports game developed by Nintendo and Next Level Games, available today for Switch. After all, Mario Striker has always been a series of excesses, with more focus on explosions than yellow cards or offside. striker has slumbered in the vault of pristine Nintendo franchises for more than a decade, his previous entry was Supercharged Mario Strikerswhich was released for the Wii in 2007.
Mario Strikers: Battle League has received some criticism for how it stacks up alongside its ancestors. The squad, which currently consists of just ten players, is thinner than ever. Longtime Fan Favorites, like daisies, are absent, with no explicit indication that they will be joining soon. (Nintendo recently told game informant that it will make more characters available as free DLC, although it hasn’t specified who they are or when they will be available.) Reviewers have also blasted the single player to feel anemic even pinned.

Yeahhhhh, I’ll be honest, I don’t really care about all that stuff. I’m here solely and explicitly for competitive multiplayer. And in that regard fight league is a feat.

I played for hours last night fight league‘s multiplayer, all local against my roommate. (Nintendo did not provide my box with early access to fight league.) It’s the kind of multiplayer experience that only Nintendo can capture on a regular basis.
Although there are only ten playable characters, there is enough daylight between their stats, creating a different playstyle for everyone. Bowser, as found throughout most of the Nintendo Extended Universe, is slow but powerful. Try tackling it with the zippy and fast Toad and you’ll just bounce off. But if Toad gets his feet on the ball, hey, good luck to any Bowser player trying to catch up. Ten players doesn’t seem like much, but there are enough combinations to make the games feel fresh… not sure what the math is, but definitely number big. I quickly learned that mixing and matching team compositions is the way to success.
Well, there’s another easy way to win: just pass the ball to Wario. For whatever reason (Hmcheating), he seems to land most of his shots.
The personalities of these characters also feel different, as each player can perform a series of victory dances after scoring. Yoshi could be running on a soccer ball while making his silly Yoshi noises. Donkey Kong might show off some really fancy footwork. Wario could eat a clove of garlic and emit a cloud of poisonous gases. Or he shakes his butt.
Mario Strikers: Battle League isn’t on my likely game of the year list yet or anything, but it’s definitely an exciting competitive multiplayer game, one that I’ll definitely be adding to the Party Time rotation. At some point I just have to accept that Wario could pull a fast one.
