Earlier this week should be a celebratory time for the folks at Meta as his reality-devouring project horizon worlds was now available in more countries. To mark the occasion, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, personally posted a “selfie” of his in-game avatar in front of a digital Eiffel Tower. Sounds cute right? The problem was that the graphics were on par with what you would expect from a child’s game Roblox, not by the efforts of a multi-billion dollar company to shape our shared virtual future. The Internet instantly toasted Mark Zuckerberg’s selfie to hell and back. And now Zuck is here to do some damage control.
Posting to Instagram is a whole new virtual rendition of Zuckerberg for those of you who’ve scrolled through enough featured posts to see it. I’m happy to report that this one seems to contain more life essence than the last one, although it’s unclear how many souls had to be sacrificed to give Mark a small twinkle in his eyes. For those keeping count, this is the fourth or fifth VR version of Zucc we’ve gotten so far. However, the crappy one we just saw came along after
Important updates for Horizon and Avatar graphics are coming soon. I will share more at Connect. I also know that the photo I posted earlier this week was pretty basic – it was taken very quickly to celebrate a launch. The graphics in Horizon can do a lot more – even on headsets – and Horizon is improving very quickly.
It’s true, screenshots of horizon worlds don’t always look as bad as what Zuckerberg shared earlier this week. But that’s also part of what made it so confusing; why is the What does the head of the company say? At the same time, horizon worlds still doesn’t look nearly as good as what you can find in other VR offerings.
Many will say it’s about ensuring that Meta’s Quest hardware, priced for the average consumer, can serve tons of people at once. But there’s performance, and then there’s artistry. The thing everyone was reacting to was a seemingly dismal lack of soul. We all know that it doesn’t take a lot of igamesnewss to make something look good, otherwise we wouldn’t look back on retro games nearly as fondly as we do. The Eiffel Tower is supposed to be an important cultural asset, but you wouldn’t tell that at all from the VR version. The digital version is uninspiring unless we’re trying to elicit a burp. It’s not even particularly pretty. what’s the point
Meta as a company already leaves a lot of people in bad taste, so they see them pushing their way into VR dominance with endless oodles of cash while seemingly caring little about the spirit of this thing that’s supposed to be our exciting technological future ? That is what makes people jump when Pastel Zucc isn’t blinking.
Anyway, better graphics! courting.
