Like a masked superhero, there is more about Marvel competitors than in the eye. “Overwatch with Marvel characters” is a formula that sounds so lucrative on paper that I initially doubt its quality because I feared that it was nothing more than a money gripper. After playing a few dozen hours and removing the metaphorical mask of the game, I can see the mildly shaped, hard -working hero at the core. Marvel competitors carry out a simple concept with immense skills and finesse. With a huge list of free playable characters at the start, a satisfactory gameplay loop and the fastest matchmaking system that I have ever experienced, the first months of the game have built up a robust basis in the coming years.
Marvel Rivals is a hero shooter by third parties, a genre of multiplayer games that are defined by a number of unique playable characters with different combat skills. The developer Netease started the game last December with a spacious list of 33 comic icons and obliged to add more every season free of charge. Playable heroes are incredibly diverse, both in terms of their playstyles and where they fit into the Marvel canon. For every A list of A-list like Iron Man and Thor, the game also contains newer, obscure characters such as Luna Snow or Squirl Girl.
Regardless of the mode you play in, it is always exciting to see how these classic characters exhibit their skills. Spider-Man can penetrate to get a KO just to be closed quickly by the Hulk, which races from the other side of the battlefield to protect your healers. After Storm conjured up a deadly Tornado, Doctor Strange can tore a portal to bring his team back to their goal after their resumption, and the invisible woman offers a massive sign to ensure that everyone can get there safely. Marvel's characters and their strength are well represented, and it is fun to see, even if they don't know all the details of the processes.
I spent most of my time with fast playing or competitive playlists and everyone happened to confuse three game modes through the same: rule, convoy and convergence. Each mode faces two six teams against each other to either record one area, to accompany a vehicle or a combination of both. If you are intimidated by PvP, you can play the same playlists for a computer -controlled enemy team in practice vs. Ai, and successes are still part of daily missions and the progress of the season pass. It is a great way to try new characters if you have to get a feeling for Iron Man's Repulsors or Star Lords twin element cannons.
There are also other modes such as conquest, doom -match and occasional seasonal mode, but the heroes of the game are designed so specially for team game modes with large cards that these other goals do not feel so funny. You can play as if you play in a quick game and find a moderate success, but that is not the case in the frenzy of a conquest card. This is a shame because the variety of characters is a large sales argument of this overpowering shooter.
Heroic shooters live and die through the strength of their duty rosters, so it is remarkable that this is one of the aspects that Marvel competitors thrive. Every comic fighter is unique and is fun to play, and while a few characters feel slightly under or overwhelmed every season, it is a remarkably balanced line -up. There are ranged heroes, melee heroes and even some such as Cloak & Dagger or scarlet witch with auto-stargeting skills for players who have not spent hundreds of hours to improve their shooting skills. They are also encouraged to switch around. For example, if an opponent chooses a figure that stands in the way of my favorite (like Wolverine while I play Groot), I can exchange someone who counters the counter -pick. The frustration is short -lived because there are so many sustainable characters to choose from.
The most unique element of Marvel Rivals in the game is the team-up system that activates skills and passive buffs when certain characters play in the same team. Venom gives Spider-Man a symbiot attack, Hela can revive Thor or Loki by getting kill after death, and Rocket can drop a ammunition light fire for punishers and winter soldiers. It adds team compositions to another complexity and encourages players to try out new characters, which keeps the matches in many ways.
The only blatant question of the heroic structure is the distribution of the roles. Characters in Marvel competitors fall in one of three camps: Vanguard, duelist or strategist. Vanguard characters have large health pools and defense skills, duelists are quick damage, and strategists have clever kits that enable them to heal and promote their teammates. Each role is equally valuable in a team, but most of the characters – 20 of 37 at the time of writing – are duel scientists who are both other roles together. Since it is the biggest category and a role that feels best like a traditional shooter, many games begin with the players who strive to choose their favorite duelist instead of playing one of the supportive roles, so that slower teammates either play Vanguard/strategy or snap into a duelant and start playing with an undisclosed team. This problem is not unique for Marvel competitors, and many players who are new to the hero shooter, probably prefer to play a character that feels more familiar, but it is more than the player's tendency. By fitting so many characters into this category of duelists, the design tightens the problem.
Although the hero manager is massive at the start, the card pool turns in the opposite direction. Fortunately, this can be corrected by future updates. Netase already added Midtown to start the first season, then six weeks later Central Park. If the studio keeps pace with this cadence, this complaint is quickly outdated.
This is without a doubt the most smooth online multi -player experience of my life. Most of the time, games are found almost instantly, and I have only been in a queue for more than 5 seconds. Toxic players are slightly registered and often complained within the day. LAG is practically not available, even if I have observed other players, and I never met with performance problems. Tickets also look beautiful, full of details and Marvel east eggs for the players looking for them.
Ultimately, Marvel Rivals is not a revolution in game design, but a highlight of the successful shooters that came before. The gameplay is tight and balanced, its characters are satisfactory and I come back every evening to play more. I have the distribution of the hero rolls, but it does not spoil the game as a whole. Marvel Rivals is unsuccessful because it is a cash, it is successful because it deserves.
