How many Miles Moraleses are there? Maybe more than you think. Marvel Comics teased that the Brooklyn Spider-Man will get his own rerun of his mentor’s most infamous storyline: The Clone Saga.
The Marvel Entertainment account only tweeted a cryptic but distinctive image, including the logo from Miles’ solo series. Miles Morales: Spider-Man and the title “Clone Saga”.
The company didn’t release any information on whether the plot will be a crossover or just the next arc of Miles’ solo book, presumably after the delay is over Outlaw Event. But either way, it’ll kick off in April 2021 – which means that this tweet is definitely not about the upcoming sequel to In the spider verse, the animated film that put Miles on the wider cultural map. This unnamed sequel won’t hit theaters until 2022.
What is the Clone Saga?
The Clone Saga, which runs between 1994 and 1996, is technically a story in which Peter Parker faces a clone of himself – the Spider-Man known as Ben Reilly – and goes through various trials and difficulties of which it is real Peter Parker and which of them manipulated memories. There was also a clone of Gwen Stacy. He and Mary Jane also got divorced. Norman Osborn also turned out to have returned from the dead and had secretly manipulated her entire life for years.
Developed during the final spasmodic upheavals of the speculative boom of the 1990s and Marvel Comics’ bankruptcy declaration, the Clone Saga was a meandering, confusing, often contradicting, but paradoxically best-selling Spider-Man crossover story. It is almost universally maligned today, except perhaps among people who have a weakness for Ben Reilly, the did It turned out he was just a clone all along, heroically sacrificing his life for Peter.
Miles Morales, as a character who started life in a parallel universe from the main Marvel universe, is a character with some branded doubles. It remains to be seen whether this clone saga comes from a pool of parallel Mileses or whether we’re going to see some proven genetic manipulations. We can expect more information before the end of January, when Marvel releases its official summaries for its comic book releases in April.
