Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) and Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) stars in this thriller about a high school writing teacher who is seduced by a rich, bored and manipulative young student. Things are obviously going very, very badly.
From our review:
What Miller’s girl Best of all – and what gives Ortega the chance to absolutely own this film – is capturing the special era of adolescence, where girls can easily transition between adulthood and childhood without warning. Ortega gets a chance here to play a downright predatory vampire and a giggly, shy schoolgirl without feeling like either of them are a front or a mockery for Cairo. Her adult personality isn’t fully formed yet, and while she tries out faces, just as she tries out words like “abusive” in her lyrics, they’re still all part of her – and they’re all part of the reason why Mr. Miller should know better than to deal with her as anything other than a student.

Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature film debut is a horror thriller that lives up to the family name. Set during a global ecological collapse, Human is about estranged siblings who learn that their father and mother have decided to participate in a nationwide euthanasia program as a form of public service. If something goes wrong, the family must select one of their own to act as a substitute participant. Of course it gets personal.

Monkey man

Director: Dev Patel
Pour: Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash
In his directorial debut, Dev Patel plays a nameless street urchin who, years after his village burns down, makes a living as a monkey-masked fighter in an underground boxing club. He begins a campaign of brutal violence to take revenge on those responsible.
From our review:
When Monkey man When the action scenes finally get going, there’s a clearer vision at work – although “clear” might not be the right word for it. Patel works with fight choreographer Brahim Chab and cinematographer Sharone Meir (Whiplash), photographs the fights up close with a frenetic handheld camera that jerks and swings the whip with the force of each blow, and deftly stitches these shots together into breathtaking, uninterrupted sequences of movement. Influenced by Korean, Indonesian and Bollywood action films, what the style sometimes lacks in clarity makes up for in ferocity and impact. The desperation of Kid’s first toilet fight with Rana is brilliantly portrayed (Kher is fantastic in a heavy, old-school role), and the extended climax is breathtaking at times, although the editing sometimes struggles to maintain focus when things get hectic.
